Hi Guys The next two weekends I'll be in Munich then the one after Vienna. Any HAMB friendly hot rod shops or other places of interest I can swing by?
Very jealous, two awesome cities. Not sure about Rod shops unfortunately, however the BMW Museum is in Munich which has a pretty good collection of cl***ic cars. Provided of course you are interested in all cars, rather than just rods! Its a small train trip out of the city. As for Vienna not sure of any car stuff but its one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You can just walk around it for hours and hours and not get bored. Again provided you are interested in looking at that! Make sure you see Stephansdom Cathedral in the middle of town, (St. Stephen's Cathedral) it is hard to miss, also go to schonbrunn palace on the outer part of the city. Also make sure you eat some strudel, drink some great beers and a munch on a schnitzel. I proposed to my now wife in Vienna, so its a special place for me but also an amazing city to explore. Enjoy!!
Thanks Chief! Yeah love to see a LOT of things when I travel including art galleries, cool architecture etc as well as greasy hot rod shops, am off snowboarding so these will be little side trips. BMW Musuem sounds like its straight on the To Do list as does the rest.
No worries Pete I didnt mention galleries in my post, not sure what you were into. There are great ones in both cities covering pretty much everything - just check the opening times as they can vary and be not open everyday. Not sure how long you are in Munich for, however a big but memorable day trip is to schloss neuschwanstein which is a castle at the start of the black forrest. It was the inspiration for Walt Disneys logo castle,..an amazing place. You catch the train to a town called Fussen (??) and its a short distance from there. If you have the time, well worth the effort. Or if it all gets too much, sit in a restaurant, drink German beer and eat a pork knuckle with sauerkraut and potato salad,....heaven!! Now if there could be a parade of rods going by when I was doing that life would be perfect!
when in the airport in vienna or munich get the magazine "oldtimer" it is a little more resto than hot rod but a place to start. it has a alot of shops listed in the cl***ifed section also there is a german street rod ***ociation, i cant remeber the link to get to them but i think it was off the great britain nsra group.
East of Wiens (Vienna to some of you. ) just outside the cty i saw a 68 or 69 cuda parked by the road. Very much traditional with aluminum wheels and such It was red and white. In Salzburg I saw a 70 Firebird cruising the streets with a snorkel. It sounded pretty good for a burnt chicken. In Munchen (Munich) There is the Museum of Technology. It is about 2 blocks down street from the Hilton, maybe three but easy walking even for an old guy. There is every engine you can imagine in that display plus all the other stuff. Plan to spend the best part of a day. If you're lucky you can find the street vendors with a 1/2 meter wurst too. Schmeckt gut! In Tubingen there is an auto museum with a 50s theme. It is accross the bridge and hard right to a side street. Well worth the visit. In Speyer down the main street to the Dom. Look to your right and up . yopu will seean full size Lufthansa jet on a pedestal high above the trees. There is a great museum. Lots of cars plus aircraft Steam etc. They have a good display of early Buicks. i have pic s from there. Radial aircraft engines hanging from the ceiling. Fighter jets including a Canadian Golden Hawk. Some Russian planes and German of course. Lots of ground vehicles. Two very serious tractor pulling tractors. A jet powered funny car. Down the road 20 KM at Sundburg or Sundenburg i think it is called is a much bigger museum that is a sister museum to Speyers. It has I am told maybe a hundred or more racing cars on display. It is on my "to do" list next Deutschland Reise. Dont forget, no trip there is complete without at least one serving of Schweinhaxe und Spaetzle. Don
