I won the Project GTO at the Hot Rod Magazine Super Nats in '85. Nice car. Built by California Street Rods. '64 hardtop, 3 duce, 4 speed, Jaguar Regency Red (maroon), white int., Halbrands. I still have but I don't drive it much. I still like hot rods better. Hot Rod never did send me a 1099 on it, but I claimed it anyway. I looked it up in "Old Cars Price Guide". At the time a number 1 condition GTO was worth about $9000, so that is what I paid taxes on.
Reminds me of the story told by Jerry Clower about raffling off a dead mule...."was anyone mad?".."yes the winner ..."but we refunded his dollar"
I know a cat that won a track roadster. I know a chick who won a new Corolla, she rolled 'er in the hills that weekend. Walked away.
Some of those give away rods, you must be present to win. Thats why I never joined. To travel across the country to possible win a car? When Ronald MacDonalds House had the give away GT40, there was a warning that the $30K in taxes had to be paid in a month.
-------------- Cats? Chicks?? Huh?? What's the deal with felines and aves winning cars?? What the hell could they do with them anyway?? Car lottery entries should be reserved for humans who could actually use a car!!!
I won 111 gallons of gas just over a week ago from KRTH Radio in Los Angeles! That will really come in handy in my She-velle!
years ago a local guy put his 34 ford street rod up for raffle, he was selling chances for $10 each, he displayed the car & sold raffle tickets all season (spring-summer-fall), one show I was at he had lines of people waiting for tickets. the drawing was to be in mid november...mid november came, and he was Gone! packed his furniture, cloths & the street rod & left town in the middle of the night. Turns out the tickets were real but never regestered with the state for tax reasons etc. there's alot of people that would like to meet up with him?
When I was a kid, early teens, I tried to buy tickets for a raffle for a t-bucket with a big blown engine at some show here, maybe even the State Fair; the lady running it basically blew me off, so that was the last time I tried anything like that. I figure if I put the money away that I would spend on all those raffle and 50-50 tickets, I could just go buy a new damned car after a few years.
I'm in a Lions club that raffled off a new car every August (from about 1950) until this year. Always sold about the same number of tix, but the car prices keep going up and we refuse to sell some imported ****ball. Went to 10K cash this year, made out better. 1099 is ugly for the winner, though. Closest I ever came to winning the Ohio lottery was I had 4 of the six numbers and the other two were off by 1 digit. 1 f-ing digit. Got like $100.
guy here opened a bottle of engine oil and it made the engine reving noise. Called the company and was one of the winners of a key that might fit a new corvette. He went to mosport race track to try the key during race weekend. Turned out he was the only person that had found one of the special bottles and left with the car.
I have never won a raffle car, but I did win a go kart once, in about 1969. It was a Rupp Chevy Jr. The local Chevy dealer, (Gene Wrestler Chevrolet in Canton ILL.), gave it away. It had a blue fibergl*** body, that looked like a 1968 Corvette. I was only about six years old at the time, and one of my older brothers friends tore the rear axel up, so I was never able to drive it myself. I sold it in 1984 or so, in the Peoria ILL. area. Wish that I had it back. If anyone in the Peoria / Bloomington ILL. area has one for sale, let me know.
In high school, 1985, I went to a raffle for a 69 Chevelle. We are standing in line to drop our tickets, and my buddy was behind me. I said ladies first and let him put his in the box first. He won a SS 396 car for a buck. Still don't sleep over that one.....
