I'm a car magazine addict. Even at that, I picked it up and leafed through it, was instantly bored.

I bought it only for the article and pics (kinda poorly written) on the Hollywood Hotrods 3 window that ChrisP here on the Hamb did the metalwork on...doubt I will get another issue though it would have to have a special car in it for sure.

I was impressed with the feature on Speedy Bill's collection and stepped up and bought a copy at Stop & Shop today. :) Nice to know were the Art Gerrick RAJO Dry Lakes car is living now. Who can pass up looking at The Hollywood Hot Rods '36 3Window. Lot more good stuff than bad, I never read adds.

Seen it on the rack at wally world today, had to look twice to know what it was, at first I thought it was a used car sales mag by the cover pic.

Looks to be another damn street rod mag by the same damn company that makes the rest of them ! How many SR mags do they need to keep shoving down the consumers mouth ? They already have the one so I guess they make it look a little more shinny and want to charge you a bunch more to make up for the lost income of the other mags they produce that aren't selling anymore . I get so many renewals for mags I have never bought just because it's from the same publisher .
Well I guess I won't even waist my time picking it up then . Really don't enjoy looking at a ton of billet and a paint job that cost thousands of dollars so some guy with nothing better to do with all his money can trailer it to a show so he can say , "Lookie what I paid someone else to build for me so I can get all the credit" and then have people con graduate me on the car that doesn't know what a road looks like ! Anyone can buy a show car but the guys/gals that make and build their own are the ones I want to look at . I am much happier seeing something that's just not perfect in every way , that has painted metal parts and an engine that they build with their own hands .
Now how about some more "Traditional Hotrod" magazines being published ! Isn't that where it all came from anyway ?

Yeah, I get pissed every time I open an issue of The Rodder's Journal. With all the surfing I was doing here in Wisconsin I was constantly confusing it with the Surfer's Journal. To end the disappointment every 3 months I finally had to cancel my sub to the Surfer's Journal. Yeah I'm being a sarcastic ass. Shit, the best rod print magazine out there still isn't good enough for some. Oh well. With few exceptions we all use an existing template when we build our cars. We make it our own but don't usually reinvent the wheel.

    Yeah, I'm a huge Rodder's Journal fan.

When you have a great platform to build on , you just keep getting better and better !
The Rodders Journal is the best Traditional magazine out there by far !

There is only one TRJ. Looked thru it and left it on the rack.

What he said.....and I put it back on the rack too. Glad I flipped through it before I threw my cash down on it. Or threw my cash away would be more like it. Its like the polar opposite of Ol Skool Rodz. :D

Picked up a copy today. Yes, it is not The Rodders Journal, but it doesn't say anywhere that is what it is trying to be. It may be trying to be something similar; but it does say its trying to be a premium to the street rodder magazine. Which I think they did very well. I don't really care for the style of some of the cars, but I do respect the quality of the finished products. I will most likely buy another copy due to the fact that I just plain like old cars.

Haven't seen it yet. Want to like and buy it. Think we need a few more, better hot rod mags. I like about two more to replace a couple who have left us. I want to support this business and my hobby.

  15. Saw it, looked at it, I think it sucks.

  16. I got a copy at SEMA and then had a long talk with the publisher about it. First I will say "I like it", so you namby pamby naysayers of doom who like to say derogatory shit like Gold Chainer can quit reading and go back to complaining as you won't get it anyway.
It was never intended to be another TRJ, just an alternative to Street Rodder that is more in depth about the cars and people. If you couldn't find the beauty in Bug's 35, the Speedy Bill Museum article,a great in depth with Isky etc. then you should just put your head back in the sand give up. If you can't look past the fact that there are rods out there that aren't traditional, and those folks are having fun too, well then go back to the crappy magazines with the Orca Betty's and drink your PBR.
    Sorry. Rant over

I think the "Premium" means its on a heavier weight paper...didn't really apply to content.

I think they should have put their resources into making Rod and Custom the size of Street Rodder instead. By using the extra substance from the Ex - Custom Rodder we used to see and Rob Fortier's involvement with that magazine, I could see lots of potential going that direction.
I recently bought the new Street Trucks and they had a HUGE amount of pictures on How to's and show coverage. I'll definitely buy another issue.

Funny... my favorite mags (premium ones anyway) all got mentioned....

TRJ,Fine Homebuilding, Surfer's Journal, Wooden boat(Love the mag... pops is the wooden boat guy though)

... Every notice that all of the above DONT go into which catalog he ordered X part from ( door, surf board, Car part boat part) and bolted on.

I also read Tradional Rod and Custom, Rod and custom ( a lil cookie cutter but close enough) Hot Rod DeLux, and Car Culture Delux (I know a lil ratty, but still 65-70% decent non rat content)

I picked up SRP... Bleh. Liked some of it Didnt like other parts of it... we'll see.

I sold my Rodders Journal #1 and Hot Rod DeLuxe We're back issue from 2008 for over $100 each, so I should speculate with Street Rodder Premium, but I don't see it.

Like to think the "high end" Hot Rods are a contradiction in terms, like jumbo shrimp. Enjoyed the historic stuff though.

Well, it looks good on the coffee table, but other than quality of the paper it's printed on there's not much new.

  25. I've dropped all my subscriptions. With all the cool online content I don't see the point.

Love that Rodders Journal. Got every issue, and for some reason I have two copies of about ten issues. Always have a couple of copies laying on the coffee table in the family room.

I don’t think the SRP will be any good. Can’t stand Street Rodder. Liked it years ago, so started a subscription last year but didn’t renew. Takes me about five minutes to go thru, then I toss it. Real crap to me. A lot of misinformation or probably they just don’t know. Same goes for Hot Rod. Used to be the Bible of Rodding, but much changed since it was sold. I’ve got rod magazines from ’52 to the 80’s, but other than TRJ I don’t save any today. Don’t buy many either.

I looked through SRP at the newstand today. Didn't buy it. The quality of the photos looked good but, for the most part, I thought that too many of the cars featured were not what I like.....too up-scale for me.
I like TRJ's choice of cars, and their in-depth historical coverage, and I'll continue to subscribe...but I really miss Hop Up! It was the best, IMO.

Flipped through a copy at Barnes & Noble, put it back and bought the new RJ.

I dunno. Maybe it's time to start making "Bring Back Rod & Custom" T-shirts again.

Got to agree, nice magazine. I did put it back after looking at it, but I'll probably buy one just because it's the first one, in spite of having absolutely NO interest in more money than sense "great eight" cars. I could have sworn the one that won the Ridler this year looks so much like one from eight or nine years ago, I had to stifle a yawn looking at it despite the megabuck perfection of it's parts.

Here's a suggestion for the editor; I found the vendor addresses woven into the feature text more than a little off putting. The vendor names and info compiled into a separate table at the end of the article would accomplish the same thing for those wanting or needing it, and not destroy the flow of the story line.
