Keep it up George. He will always remember that moment of freedom and trust. Keep teaching and teach him to question.... I agree with EMS from previous post....
Just wondering why you did'nt wait til the fields were white with snow! Seriously, It will be one of those memories that when your in your 80's and havin' a Molson Canadian with your nephew that you can laugh about!
when i was twelve i had already drank a beer, smoked a cigar, killed a man, and had a women. But i hadnt driven a car. joking of course. My dad used to make drive out the trash cans at 12 or maybe 13. I loved taking out the trash!
My daughter and 4 grandkids(all girls) arrived from Australia They all drove the roadster arround the neighbor hood.. One would turn a corner and goto the left lane.
Thats cool mann!!!! When I was his age my dads friend took me out in his field in his stock car and spun donuts and hauled *** everywhere ever sense I have been hooked!!!!
video games the destruction of our future. good to see you got him out there. i try on my bro whos 16 and he hardly sees the light of day ,its a shame.
Another young mind warped into the automotive infection .... lucky guy and yes that smile won't go away for a long time. My Dad first let me drive the family wagon at 13 and I still have that goofy smile every I think about it! Thanks for the memory, Rob.
Thats a great pic, he'll remember that one and save cherish the pic and memories for many years to come.
Get 'em in the garage EARLY - my son (the aptly named BEvERage fetcher) has a blast. Now he turns wrenches, goes for rides, and really enjoys club meetings! We're starting to look for his first car... told him he could have one, but he had to build it (with my help, of course)! I figure that if he builds it and invests his time and money in it, he'll be a little more careful with it.
I have two nephews, ages 6 and 4, I take them to a ton of car shows, they love it, they want to know what every car is, the good thing is that they remember what the cars are, so at the next show they tell me what those cars are, I love to see the way that they get so excited at the car shows because that's how I was at their age, they also both want to be involved in my next project, I'm proud to play my part in the corruption of today's youth
My boy was eleven and a half when my bud who owns the local service station took a liking to him and gave him his first car. Now five years later he is on vehicle number nine. Mostly field cars that he has busted up and then s****ped out for profit. His '48 Chevy Fleetline is coming along pretty good now. His uncle and he have the T-5, 235, and S-10 rear installed and pretty well sorted out. Next it's on to the wiring and interior. Keep showing an interest in the young ones. For every miserable deadbeat teenager you here about, there is a good kid somewhere that is going to grow up to make a difference.
Eh, I'm 15 (Well 16 in May) and this summer I learned that popping the clutch in a 302 Ford powered Jeep with a stock 6 cyl. Jeep driveline can result in some bad things... It was fun before then, going god knows how fast, (Speedo doesn't work) down a long dead end dirt road, jamming gears with the lil' jeep 3-speed, idk how it held up, but something had to give...now I gotta make it 4-wheel drive again...
That first picture would have been my grandfather and me...........60 years ago. If your ever in the neighborhood stop in and I'll show you the results of what you've started. Frank
Hey, that's me thirty years ago in a '47 international. He'll rember this forever. And always smile when he does.
That picture could have been my 22 year old son about 8 years ago. His very first time behind the wheel of any vehicle to drive it was a chopped and channeled model A coupe with a built flathead and 4 speed. In fact we both sat in the very same car last Saturday to see how well with both still fit (lol). "LACK OF CHROME" is what is wrong with todays youth. Not to mention all of the previous things previously posted.
Us kids had unsupervised access to a '49 International KB 3 and a 1961 IHC C99 shortbox with a slant 4. We made those trucks pay for their sins.....
cool thread. id p*** it on if i get a chance. i was 11 when i was sat in a model a tub with 383 chrysler, black with flames, and driven at no slow speed around the block by one of em crazy hot rodders. that did it for me, and ive had an uncurable sickness ever since.
I remember bombing around a pasture thirty years ago in an old Chevy truck with a bolt-action shifter when I was about that age, what fun!
first time operating a car I was 7 years old, my dad had me back a 77 monte carlo off of a trailer while he stood outside and watched. My mom thought he was trying to pull some sort of insurance scam first actual drive? maybe 13 or so in an 81 lesabre wagon, sporting a 350/th200 out of the previously mentioned Monte. By now, you're probably beginning to see where I get my affinity for heavy iron
I remember those drives. My first was standing in my dads lap trying to keep at 1968 Firebird between the lines while my dad worked the gas. iIwas 5 or six. My step dad let me drive his 1966 ford pickup with a straight six and a four speed with the widest shift pattern I have ever drive. Drove that one around the field while building our home, I was 15. When i was 16 use to drive the same truck from the house building to our home when my step dad had tomany suds on the job site. Took forever to stop grinding that 4 speed with my step dad.
That is a great photo. I wish that I had a pic of my 3 year old son when we (me, with him in the p*** seat) did his first burn out. My wife was mad but it was worth it.
If that is corruption then I am more than in favor! I learned how to drive on a farm when I was a young young kiddo! There was nothing better than riding around on someone's lap! That is awesome!
Awesome. I remember sitting on my Dad's lap when I was 8ish and steering while we drove into town. He'd push in on the clutch and would tell me when to shift too. As soon as I was tall enough to reach the pedals in the car, I got to drive on the gravel road from our house up to the blacktop which was about half a mile. Good times! Not sure how it's going to work with my boy since we live in Chicago. I'm sure we'll figure something out though. Plus there are always trip's to Grammy and Grandad's house.
