Anyone help with some info on removal of the steering column in a 1936 chevy coupe? Do I pull the steering wheel and drop the box and column or pull the steering box and remove the plate on the firewall and pull it out up through the floor as a unit? Any help will be helpful,
i've always pull the wheel and drop it down. but i do it on the lift. the trick to getting the wheel off is to drill and tap two holes for the steering wheel puller. i've also tapped the horn button holes. don't try to hit or pull on the outside of the wheel it will break.
I pulled the wheel and outer column, then unbolted the steering box with inner shaft still attached to it.
I pulled the steering wheel unbolted the steering from the dash, jacked up the front end of my 39 Buick disconnected the tie rod, and pulled it out from below.
Thanks I will start with removal of the wheel, however I don't want to ruin the horn button, any tips on the removal of the horn to expose the steering wheel nut? A putty knife leverage or does the button assembly unscrew?
Most early buttons on Non-Fords or Fords after 1939 come off by a push in and twist to the left. They have a spring holding tension on them and some have a rubber donut underneath which can be deteriorated and holds 'em in like glue, eith crumbly rock glue or gooey glue.
The last '54 I did came up through the floor, but it was a clunker and I can't remember if there was much of a floor to worry about.
Thanks I removed the '36 Chevy std steering wheel, the retaining nut and pulled the steering box bolts, and down through the floor we went, after jacking up the car a few inches. Thanks again.
S I have plans to send my sector to Rock Auto for rebuild and wasn't planning the entire steering shaft.
