i bought a ford flathead dual point distributor off of a crap 46 motor a local guy had for sale. a flathead guy i know thinks it may be a mallory but im not sure. its the kind that mounts on the front timing cover and is driven by the cam. everything looks good but the points and I dont know what kind of points to replace them with. anyone know?

  2. A picture would help a lot - flathead V8's had dual points as stock - are you sure it isn't just a stock distributor? They all mounted on the front of the motor until 49, with various types depending on the year.

The 59A type distributor used from 46 thru 48 was a decent enough distributor on its own. Mallory never made one to compete with it back in the day since they worked with Ford to design it if I remember correctly. Modified to use a crab type cap and rotor from the earlier 1942 style, its about the best distributor made for a street driven flathead Ford even today. The 78-12107 points set can be purchased from Macs or any number of early Ford parts suppliers. NAPA carries them in the Echlin line under P/N ECH CS47.

A couple years ago you were still able to get the correct points at Napa. I'm sure any of the early V8 parts places have them also.
