Damn, I'm moving to Japan what a cool scene, not really. I'm in Japan right now and know allot of these cars and people. Very cool thread.

And I'm lovin this thread. It is cool to get a feeling for classic car cultures around the world. It seems that the Japanese have a bit more of a lowrider feel to their culture, and I'm diggin it. Looks like a few traditional rods too. I am going to the Rockin Jalopy's Motorama in The Netherlands tomorrow, which is advertised as a traditional hot rod and custom show. I am interested to see if the European built rods have their own unique flavor the way that Japanese rods do (but different). I'm guessing they will be closer to what we call traditional rods, but will they be the same? I will report my findings, with photos.

Toshi, do you know why they ruined this car?
It was kool when it had caddi wires and skinny whites and could have been even cooler
with the right paint.
But this.....big inch wheels and modern paint...makes no sense.

 

Please keep the pictures coming. I just went through all 30 pages and loved every picture I saw. It looks like Japan knows exactly what to do with old American vehicles. I must say, I'm more into motorcycle than I am classics, and I love the Harleys that I see come out of Japan. I also follow a few Japanese blogs, GRIMBs artwork is amazing, are you familiar with his work? Thank you for posting the pictures and if you happen to come across any tri-five Chevy trucks I wouldn't mind taking a look at them.

The "latin looking cruisers" is very popular here. There is no "I am white, I cannot do that" pressure or "only a latino/black would drive something like that" stereotype here in Japan.

I think you missunderstood what im saying.
I totally love the japanese scene, cause its an almost perfect isle of style, plus, they build their domestics w/ as much care as they use w/ the american tin, and this doesnt happen a lot on my shores (europe).
What i was saying is that that Crown when was in primer had tons of potential but was ruined, of course in my opinion, on completition w/ the aid of big billet wheels and modern lookin paint.
If they kept the wires and white band tires and painted it nice and simple or w/ period correct graphics, it would have been one of the most out there japanese domestic kustoms ever.
As it is now i cant help but think how cool it COULD have been.
Still, i freakin love japan to bits, and im dead inspired but what happens there.

 

I totally agree with your original post. Especially regarding the wheels, hell no!!! The paint, well it is done so nicely that I cannot completely dismiss it. Though would I do paint like that, hell no again... different tastes for all, you find that here in the HAMB for that matter... I guess the point I was trying to convey is that there is no cross culture / styling automotive taboos here, all the automobile culture is imported...

Not all car culture is imported in japan thou.
Bosos are something unique of Japan, and i think they should be proud of it.
I dont really like the way out there cars, but the mild ones w/ small and deep wheels and maybe lenghtned hoods are friggin kool!
