Shameless self promotion?

 Is it me or is there alot of it lately?. It was one thing when it was "look what I saw at so and so's shop today." Now its more like "look at what we can do, we are so cool, call us." Build threads are cool, like the weesner truck thread, but random threads with overall shop photos just feel like spam to me.

Those of you pimping yourself on here does it payoff for you or is it just vanity?. I am not trying to start a riot here, I am just wondering.

Some other forums allow you to spam every thread if you are a sponsor and it becomes quite aggravating because a tech question quickly turns into "who's widget should I buy."

    Blast away!

Sometimes it may seem to get out of hand but I know that I and probably a lot of others study those same threads to pick up ideas for our own cars and projects. I've subscribed to a lot of the chopped top threads just to refer to when I chop the one on my truck again and who can't learn something from B***'s latest thread.

I can agree with it getting tiresome to get those self promoting posts when you ask how to do something on some boards. I see that quite a bit on one and usually from the same person pushing his high end stuff.

I did decide who I intend to have build the frame for my A-V8 project due to seeing his work on similar frames here on the HAMB though. When you are sitting out in the middle of a cornfield it's nice to be able to see several examples of someone's work somewhere besides a magazine add or catalog.

I plan to post build threads when I get a HAMB-friendly project going (my own or a customer's), but not for any ulterior motive. I like reading others' threads (learn something from every one), and to me its a way to help the site and the people here.

Most of the guys here build their own stuff anyway. If it leads to some business down the road, great, but that's not my purpose.

I don't know about shop pics, I like seeing how some of the 'professional' guys do it, even though I'll never be able to pay someone to work on my stuff.

Does seem that sometimes some of the 'vendors' take liberties.

And I think I know the thread that may have incited this one, if I'm right the only thing I thought was 'improper' about it was the Ebay link.

If it wasn't for a little shameless self promotion, a lot of great ideas would get overlooked. Nothing wrong with a little bragging, we work hard on our stuff and like the feedback, good or bad. Some threads, like B***' build, get printed and put in my file cabinet for my someday '29 A sedan

So let me get this right, you are complaining about shops posting pics of buidls to promote themselves...yet your signature says "Support your local hot rod shop because they support you!"

Build threads are awesome, no problem with them. Just random threads trying to gather interest with a bunch of shop photos seem weird to me.

I didn't even see one with an ebay link.

I didn't want to name anyone or any thread particular, this isn't about any one thing or person. I was just browsing during lunch and it seemed there was one on everypage.

Maybe- but not all of them. Many here are on their 1st car builds. I like cool builds. I don't care if it's a pro shop or a home builder in his lean-to, as long as it's quality.

Thank you for helping to clarify.

I can't say enough, build threads are good and I have several of them saved, including B***'s.

The motivation behind a build thread is different. A build thread is there to educate others on how something can be done, not how we can do it for you. A build thread has progress pics.

It is an oppertunity for self-promotion and some people exploit it. It is my humble opinion that if you feel that you need to self-promote then you are probably not really good enough to begin with. The biggest advertisers do so because they have to, shoet and sweet. I do know there are many high quality builders on here that offer advice and express opinons and without any hint of the caliber work that they do on a daily basis - ElPolako for instance - those are the ones we need to keep around. The ones that 'are so good that they don't need to brag' kind of guys.

You have to get a little more specific, in order to make your case you just may have to put your finger where you wouldn't put your ****.
Any time a pro is showing me how he got to his result I'm watching, even if he is only showing me half of it and I am looking through a 1 800 number. A good example of your case is the Power Block series, all that consists of is an info mercial, sadly that's how it gets aired so we get a little free looky at some new junk. Hate it but some times watch it.

Hmmm, I don't see that as fitting into what the OP said. When I read that thread originally, I wanted to know who the company was... but it wasn't mentioned (until later).

The pros showing their abilities is something I really enjoy. I learn a ton from it.

I shamelessly self promote no matter where I am, on the web, or in the real world.
I do it quietly and respectfully so as to not come off as an ***.
fact of the matter for me, and most others, I don't mind to share the 2 things I know (which is nothing, and being lazy) they just happen to be how I make my living as well.
btw, get all your custom powder coating at Streetwerkz.com!!!

I like the tech and build threads. There is always a new way or more to learn. Some items I may never use but, can tell someone else about them.

What's the real issue with the self-promotion? So long as it doesn't come off as an adverti*****t I think they're fine personally. If the thread is just a bunch of pics of finished rides it usually dies a slow death anyways. Sometimes things are brought up out of those pictures that weren't intended, like the Lister from the other day, a neat off topic car...

Funny, but not applicable....or helpful for that matter. I am allowed to notice things and it just seemed to me that some threads came off as spam. While I forgot the proper punctuation the original post was more of a question than anything.

I am not here to make a "case" for or against or call an individual or a shop out. I repeat this is not a personal attack!!

I'm not sure this was for you. It seems to be applicable in several ways, oh ****, it could even apply to me.:D

Whats wrong with blowing your own horn. Isn't that what car shows are all about. People like to show off their skills. When I see a professionally built hot rod at a show I try to see how things are done and maybe improve my own skills. Sure the guy is probably showing the car to promote his business but I'm sure he's also proud of his work.I don't see how posting here is any different.

    Now that is funny!!!!!!!!!

  28. I know exactly what you are saying I am tempted to do some of it myself.

There is a pretty thin line between what is done in the interest of the HAMB and what is done in the interest of advertising. Hard call to make I wouldn't want to make it.

I'm all for build threads whether done by a shop or by a fella in his garage. I guess whomever is posting has to decide if they are posting so that others can learn or just to be touting their new product.

hard call to make for sure.

Sure, really two different things. Support your local hot rod shop means don't buy it from speedway and then call me or anyone else because its junk or the buyer doesn't know how to put it together.

Thanks for understanding what I am saying. Your last paragraph is perfect, it really does come down to the poster's discretion.

There is a large number of industry/hobby professionals on this board. Most of them are here to help and I applaud those people. Someone mentioned Steve already and he is a perfect example of balance between promoting his business and being a very helpful HAMBer. He has bailed me out a couple of times, whether he knew it or not.
