Well whats up all haven't posted in a while been busy with projects and life. I just wanted bost a bit about my new 1946 chevy puzzle my oldest and I brought home yesturday. Not a fricken clue where to start but here it is. happy birthday to me. She is the one creeping in the cab!
wow, think many of us have been there. looks like a very good foundation. could start out with a basic drive train, etc and get it on the road sooner. or go crazy and do a full tilt chopped, stretched, channeled cab and more. depends on your skills, budget, etc. you will not be bored for a while. see current post " Went by to see and old friend" maybe you guys could share ideas and progress with each other.
cool thanks need to let it simmer in the garrage for a few befor I decide what the heck I'm gonna do. At least this time i don't have to spend countless hours cleaning and cleaning and more cleaning.
Ya scored some more parts for the 46 this past weekend. I got a set of wheels and a 47 bed for it. now to figure out running gear and drivetrian.
So I spoke to guy this morning about a s10 pick up. A longbed single cab edmunds says it's 117.5 length and the 46 is like 115 no totally sure as its in pieces can't seem to find a accurate number online. What all your thoughts on s10 idea??
Those have to be one of thee coolest models of vintage Chevy trucks ever, great project, keep us posted. My vote is NOT S-10, but that's just me, keep the family and yourself happy!!. BDM
Well I have been looking at differant chassis ideas. The s10 just seems like a economical way to get modern running gear and future parts should be around for a while. While entertaining chassis ideas a buddy offered me a 42 chevy chassis that has a camaro clip on it. The camaro clip seems to wide and will rub the fenders if ride height is where i would like to see it. I have thought about useing the stock chassis and trying to modernize it with MII or jag front clip but that is really a grip of cash and some fab skills I may not have down quit yet. Any way we will see what direction go when I get abetter handle on what all I still need drivetrain wise.
I am thinking of getting a '46 to make a driver out of and I am wondering if Scott Danforths "K" member for the '47-'55 Chevy trucks would work as it uses S-10/G body front suspension. Sounds like a good idea to keep the stock frame but modern proper width suspension.
You know oldguard I did not think of that I could just use the front clip and rear out of the s10 and few other pieces thanks
Looks like you got it off the trailer that's a good starting place. I would start by loosley bolting it together and seeing what you need to build it, and also getting a good look at it to see what I wanted to do with it. Then start where I could afford to start. I had a '41 (same basic truck) that I put a high torque 292 in and a full syncro 3 speed back in the '70s. Other than clean it up I dropped the snout about 3 and the tail about 2 and drove the hell out of it. I loved that truck. Anyway happy b-day to you you lucky bum.
Thanks Beaner! fortunitly it came with 80% of the metal work done just needs paint and assembly/mods. I did not get the running gear as I was told they where no good and got tossed by previouse owner. A really good friend of mine has a inline 6 out of a 68 camaro he offed to give me with the 3spd still attached. I may go that route not sure yet still takeing it all in. Lots of options I see for this particular year. Un like my 47 plymouth thats gonna sit for awhile now that the truck has arrived.

never enough cool old trucks around , i always wanted my cousins 39 ford with a 327 gm mill and a hard wood rack bed , he sold it to a guy he used to work with and it got real wrapped around a tree and that was its end : ( good luck with your project
Wow thats sucks. thanks for the positive vibe a 39 ford would be great I really have a passion for the 40 ford 1/2 ton but alas they are out of my price range even in project condition. I had a line on one here a few weeks ago but they would not budge on price and it was missing a ton of parts. So I choose the 46 chevy instead. the 40 for is bar far the best looking truck of the time. People that own them know that for sure.
It's a lot of work, trying to make sure that all of the body panels line up. I've spent the last 6 (working on it only on weekends) months getting my 46 GMC mounted, and I'm still not done.
I see you must be talking about the front fenders and grill??? do you have apic of where you are at current with build?
in the beginning: having a lift makes this so much easier (37 ford humpback 2-door sedan and 56 buick in background) core support mounts (obviously just tack welded, lots of welding to do once everything is mounted) extremely customized core support 5.3l lsx engine had to shorten the frame rear cab mounts front cab mount currently mounting the bed
We'll be modifying the frame a little bit right in front of the doors, because it is too wide by about 2 inches.
Here she is with the front end and cab mounted, we hadn't started on the bed yet. 2" spacers are installed up front. The rear has a 4x4 blazer rear end, because it is wider, and it also has disc brakes. Chassis is a 2003 extended cab, hence why we had to shorten it so much. Even if we used a long bed chassis, we'd probably still shorten it a little, in order to get the bed as close to the cab as possible.
Very cool, tho it looks like you have a 'GMC puzzle'. Nonetheless, it looks like you have all the 'pieces'. Good luck!
Definitely a puzzle, it didn't even include the original frame. Body is in excellent condition for the most part. If the original steel bed floor hadn't been stretched and bent, I would've reused it. It had absolutely zero rot.
Not sure the bed would have had an 'original' steel floor, but perhaps GMC's did. Chevrolets had wood floored beds. Cool, keep us posted and as stated before, stovebolt.com can help!
GMC's had steel floors. And this one is definitely original, you can see all of the holes on the bed sides where I had to drill out all of the spot welds. Pain in the neck...
I have a stock 1941 I am building, also I am putting a 41 on a S10 frame, here are some pics of the frame mods my son and I did to get it to sit flat on the frame. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=514965&page=3 see my pics there... also I have a 46 1.5 ton still all assembled for the most part, at least the front sheet metal,, so I can look and see where all those funky sheet metal parts go.
