As long as we are talking Ebay... here is a new feature that I just found... its called "Want in Now" ... where people list what they want and if you have it you can contact them ... thru ebay of course ... and sell it...

    Whoa!

    Thanks for the tip.

That's really shady hiding the shipping cost in the small print like that.

Someone could probably use the "buy it now" of $0.99 and then insist on picking up the transmission personally.

    :)

I've seen magazines go for a couple bucks then found the guy wanted 7 bucks for shipping to make up for the low sale. Then you get the magazine in an envelope with 3 or 4 stamps on it.

I have seen this more than once. Most recently nearlynew4you tried to charge me $70 to ship seat springs!! No upholstery, just springs. Beware of --- nearlynew4you---- (actual cost to ship-$24) This ebayer also said they were in good shape and were for my 1937 Ford truck. Intentional, deliberate fraud. You have to ask how much they are going to charge you for shipping before you bid. They think they are going to make their profit on the shipping.

If it comes with the snow i'll bid on it.. !!!

    florida is boring sometimes.

  7. I just had a thought egay has a % fee so by putting the price in the shipping you would be able to avoid the highr fee and sell for a lower price and advertise it well. You would have to state the shipping in bold print but it sounds kinda like a tax loop hole. Useless

  8. I've heard of people who sell trinkets and any cheap junk they can get their hands on; and sell it for what they paid; but jack up the shipping as that's the only profit they make. Buyer Beware!

I reported him to ebay. This is BS...I had it happen to me on what appeared to be a legit auction except that the shipping was more than the price of the item new in the stores! Ebay took care of that seller and they'll take care of this one too.

happens with things like records and cds all the time. not to that level maybe but way above the item cost. i still buy sometimes because it's still cheaper or something i haven't found around here. last one was a cd i won for 2.15 guy charged 3.50 for shipping and when it arrived in the USED OLD envelope the actual shipping was 1.07. still 5.65 was cheap as hell but the guy sells nothing but cds on ebay and has to know it's only like a buck. oh yeah and he was sssllloooowwww with shipping it...ken....

  11. Had this happen to me with a guy selling an item only fifteen miles from where I live and I told him that shipping wouldn't be necessary because of my proximity..., He agreed gave me an address to pick it up and his phone number.

So I Paypal'd him the money minus the Shipping!

After a week of trying to contact him I receive a check and a "Nasty Gram" stating that under "No circumstances" does he want to deal with anybody for the fear of being ripped off...!!!

His shipping costs would enable him to ship to Antarctica and back with change left over...!!!

If it wasn't for the swap meets being spread so far apart in time and location..., I doubt if I'd ever use ebay...!!!

I'm waiting on a dvd, they charged me $15us shipping! It's been about 4 weeks now, and I'm getting the feeling I've been ripped off.
It's strange though, we all bitch about ebay, and all the scammers. But we use it all the time. It's like crack, you use it enough and you get hooked.

ebay is in business to MAKE money. If people are scamming on the shipping costs then ebay is LOSING money. ebay only collects fees on the sale price, not the shipping. This guy is selling a $400 tranny and only paying ebay fees on the $0.99 "Buy It Now' price. Others are using the same scam trying to keep their listing fees down.
I hear people bitching all the time about how big business is ripping them off...if you want to get heard, then tell them where they are LOSING money. It gets their attention better than a 2x4 across the chops.

I just got an email at work today from a fake Ebay. I sell rare coins and bullion and some through ebay and since you have to garauntee authenticity they try to trick you into thinking that you account has been suspended due to the fact that your items are not real. They then ask you to update your info..of course. Don't fall for these tricks they look pretty professional and convincing.

CharlieLed is right, the final value fee on .99 is nothing. On the other hand think what the fee would be on $400.00 !
Its way for the seller to avoid Final Value Fees, pretty smart for the seller but for the poor guy who didn't take the time to read the whole listing? Owww talk about dropping the soap!

PEOPLE! PLEASE ALWAYS READ THE LISTING TOP TO BOTTOM.
Guy calls me and tells me he bought a 49 Merc roof (yes whole roof!) on ebay for $46.00.
Sounds good so far, then he tells me the guy is trying to rip him off on shipping, "guy wants $454.00 to box it and ship!" I say damn was that the quote he gave you? aaaa welll aaaaa he had that listed as the shipping cost in the ad.
He bid on it without reading the listing, I don't know how much it costs to ship a Merc roof but I don't think I would have bid on it if I thought $454.00 was to much.
READ THE WHOLE LISTING OR GET A SHIPPING QUOTE before you bid!

I used ebay to help pay for my motorcycle roadracing habit ( Hell yeah I had it bad, one guy told me Meth was cheaper! ) by selling off my street and racing parts and it pays to be very careful. :)

  16. I've saw it on a Hammer Drill that was 9.00 no reserve and 19.99 ship which still wasnt real bad...But that deal- 400 dollar ship would really bite!!

  17. A Merc roof probably would cost $400 plus to ship though - it almost certainly would have to go truck freight between how big it is and what it weighs, and that's not cheap (starts at $100 I've been told). By the time you build a crate for it you'll need 3 or 4 guys to even move the damn thing. Anyone up to snuff on truck freight? if this was light enough to go UPS they'd charge a fortune because of the size, don't know if truck freight does the same or not.

On stuff that big I tell people 'you got to come get it' - usually you're ahead money-wise if you have the time to come with a pickup, throw it in and go back. I had a guy come from MI to upstate NY for a Chrysler rear window I sold him. His 25+ MPG minivan the trip cost him maybe $100, better than risking the glass in a crappy crate on a Greyhound.

Shipping stuff is a pain in the ass if you're lazy or busy, so I can see why people charge for their time to pack an item. I don't, but I'm not the best at getting it done either. $400 is rediculous for a transmission - how long can it take to strap it to a pallet? Thats how you'd ship a rearend housing... the shipping should be determined by how far it has to go to get to you.

These guys that don't want to have you come to their house, fine, offer them $5 in gas, or buy them coffee or something, at whatever location is handy - if someone is that close to me, I'll offer to meet or bring it to whatever show is up next. For that matter, I'd think about delivering myself for gas and time before I'd go truck freight on some of this stuff.

I sell on ebay and these sellers cause me a lot of extra work. Even though I state in my ebay auctions that I will charge only the actual Postal Or FedEx shipping charge (with nothing extra added for "handling"), in recent months I have been innundated with potential bidders wanting to know the shipping charge. I do not mind giving shipping quotes but when you have about 40 to 50 auctions running and you have to do 20 or more shipping quotes a day, it eats up a good amount of time. Many potential bidders have told me they got "burnt" by sellers who charged outrageous shipping and handling fees (like $7.00 shipping for a CD).

Unfortunately, if the sellers states the high shipping charge in the auction description, ebay will not go after them, so read the WHOLE auction description (especially the shipping info), and check the sellers feedback to see if there are any complaints about extra high shipping costs. Ebay is getting a lot of complaints about these sellers with way high shipping/handling costs. It remains to be seen if they will do anything about it as they sure are making money from them these days.

ive had that one too! I got nervous thinking it was real, so I emailed ebay and they said it was fake

as far as the tranny goes, someone in Ethiopia should buy it! I bet it will cost the seller more than $400 to ship it to the middle of nowhere.

I tried that for a while but there are so many dumb people on ebay, that some of them were using the US Postal Rate calculator and figuring I could ship say a distributor, by Media Mail (which is for books, magazine, LPs, Videos, and LPs/CDs ONLY), as they were just looking for the lowest rate and did not how to use the rate calculators, and when they won the auction and I gave them the REAL ACTUAL (Priority Mail, Parcel Post or FedEx ground) shipping rates, they got all kinda pissed off, saying I was ripping them off on shipping, and I had to send them a couple of lenghty emails to explain what the real deal was. My putting the weight in the auction caused me even more work (emails) as it seemed most bidders were clueless on how to use online shipping rate calculators.

i was bidding on a halibrand qc a few weeks back i lost the bid so i figured no big deal but then an email popped up second chance bidding because the high bidder couldnt come up with the funds.... so i start emailing the guy back and forth he sends me all his info i give him my name and address... so he said he wanted the money sent to england but the qc would be coming from new york where his wife was this sorta got me suspicious... so i hit reply on one of the emails he sent me and instead of going to an @ebay.com address it went to an @aol.com address so that was the end of that....he had me pretty much fooled with all his emails they looked so perfect will all the authentic ebay things and paypal things.. thank god i didnt send him the grand ...... keep an eye out for this shit ..

    just a heads up

I think 99% of the sellers & buyers on eBay are OK, but there a few dirtballs that will try to screw you. I always check the shipping fees before I bid. When I sell I list the unboxed weight of the item and my zip code, the seller can get a rough estimate of shipping before bidding, and the actual cost after it is packed. I have made a few typos, "please add 42.00 for postage and handling" looks scary if you miss the shift key when you wanted to say $2.00.

    Also check the payment options.
I bid on something, and then realized the guy doesn't take PayPal,
or ship outside the US.
    Of course I won.

Luckily a couple friends down south bailed me out on that one.
    Now I'm more carefull.

I saw one guy wanted 15 British Pounds($30 US) for International shipping
    on a $5.00 item.He still has it. :)

Also check the sellers other auctions,I've seen people get into bidding wars over one item, when the same seller had another identical item listed that went unnoticed.

The Second Chance scam has been taking place for a while. You can get more info on it (and other ongoing ebay scams) at this website:
