Pulling a car up om ramps front AND rear anyone done it?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Nov 20, 2010.

  1. I had a half ***ed thought. I could get my car up nice and high if I pulled it up on ramps in the front and rear of my car. It's a open wheel car so their is no clearence issues. I have a set of metal ramps and I see used sets on craigslist all the time for cheap. Has anyone here done this before? Thanks, Todd

After I pulled my car up on the ramps, I had to jack up the rear and slide the ramps under, only way I could do it with my car

Gibbons made a fibergl*** stand that did this same thing. I used a set to ***emble my old T

Personally, I'd jack the front, slide the ramps under the wheels and then jack the back and do the same.

I'd also make sure I didn't have cheap chinese ramps.

Make sure they have the bracing from the front part of the leg to the ramp if the car is heavy.

drive up on with the front, then jack the rear and turn one the other direction as a security.

Even with 2 wheels, I always jack up the car and slide the ramps under. Maybe it's just me, but the ramps always seem to squirt out of the way the few times I've tried to drive up. Much easier, safer, and more accurate placement by jacking up the car first.

You just have to block the front wheels so it doesn't roll back down the ramps when you lift the back wheels off the ground. I would do it the other way and set the E brake.

    Don't even attempt it.

Trying to pull the car up on 4 ramps at the same time is a recipe for disaster, no matter how light it is.

    :) :D

That is the ONLY way I can do it. My front bumper hits the ramps before the 32 starts upward ... and binds. So I have to drive my 32's up on a pair of 2X8's nailed together ( to get the floor jack under the front axle ) and then place the ramps under the front wheels after jacking the 32 up.

and ALWAYS turn the ramps in a opposite direction ...

Personally, I back the rear wheels onto the ramp, set the parking brake, then jack the front and set ramps or jack stands.

    I like that emergency brake...

Drive it up , jack the rear up . Make sure the emergency brakes are on and the car is squarely on the ramps.

Be careful if you try to drive the car up the ramps in your garage. A slick smooth garage floor, can cause the ramps to squirt out from under the car and drop the front end down quickly, busting something on its way. If you want to drive them up on slick concrete instead of rough like on a driveway, put several 2X4's on the floor from a wall, to keep the stands from sliding. Personally, It is much safer to jack the car up, then slide the stand under it.

Jack stands and a floor jack. Isn't your car worth it. Isn't your LIFE worth it??????

  22. Smartest answer here, its also the way I do it. DON'T run the front up then jack the rear, that is just asking for trouble!

    Doc.

If you're going to do all the jacking to put ramps under, just do it right and use jackstands. A lot safer, and allows you to work on wheels, hubs, tires, brakes, etc.:)

I do the ramps on two and then jack up the rear and place jack stands under the axle. I also leave the floor jack firmed up under the diff. As far as the ramps I always jack up the front first and slide the ramps under, never drive up the ramps. I also put the ramps facing opposite directions so that in effect the front is chocked in both directions.

  26. I do it all the time, when i don't need to access the drums or hubs. as it's been stated, it's probably too dangerous to drive up all 4. But driving up one set, then jacking up the other end and sliding them in is probably the safer bet. i never drive up them anymore. Got tired of having them move on me.

I know a guy that backed his full fendered, hammered 34 Tudor onto a pair of ramps and backed way too far.....
The ramp portions of the ramps popped up, folding the running boards against the doors! With the hammered roof, he wasn't able to crawl through a window. He had to yell for his Wife, who called one of his friends who came over to jack up the car and get him out.

Funny story, now but it did a lot of damage to the running boards and all 4 steel fensders. Not a good day. I try to stick with a floor jack and heavy jack stands.

Ramps are a good way to screw your car up and/or die when you accidentally drive the car off the edge of the ramp or the pieces of **** colapse on you.
Don't **** around, use a jack and some stout jack stands,I usually use two jackstands on each corner of the car.
When I'm working outside on soft ground(I don't have a garage at this time)I use some 15x14 stock car wheels for jackstands,no way can they tip over.
Pretty hard to holler for your neighbor to come save you with a car sitting on your chest, squeezing the air out of your lungs.:confused::eek:
