Nice work, Flop. Looks like a fun project. Most A firewalls seem to have the same holes that you see there. That's where the manifold heater ***y p***ed through. Even came with instructions to drill a series of holes in a circle to make a "knock-out" of sorts.

Always enjoy learning from the pros. It's one of the great things about this fantastic HAMB.

Excellent work! You find extra holes all over 30's cars. I'm guessing that roof hole was for an old radio antenna. Are those sorta close patch panels from Howell's?

I had to fix similarly made hole in my '35's Firewall. Seemed like they were made with a pick axe.

Nice work. How about showing us the individual steps on how you go about filling a hole? Esp what to look for when things start to go wrong. I have a problem with the undercut at the edge of my weld, how do you deal with that?
    Thanks, oj

always refreshing to see someone taking the time to do it right, grinding and filing, instead of booger welds and gobs of bondo. no reason for it when the old iron is so easy to work with when its still pretty much intact. nice work.

    Hey Flop,

Looks like you're gettin after it!

On those marginal repopped patch panels- ya can usually clean up the lines and use them by running the squared off beads thru one of those cheap Chi-Comm. beaders to soften the hard edges, and make them look alittle more oem. If ya haven't got a beading machine ya can clamp a high crowned dolly, one that closely matches the beads correct shape, into a vise, and lightly tap down the hard edges to match the original quarter panel's shape. Most repopped patch panels require more work than they are worth, and it's usually just less work to build your own.

hot rods to hell idk where the patch panels are from. the guy that owns the car bought them but he said he got all his stuff from snyders in ohio but im guessing they have to be from some one else .

haha someone def went nuts with a hammer and chisel to make these ones jeffery!

OJ. i trace some sheetmetal. with a hole thats small i usually weld a stud on it with the stud gun so i have something to hold onto to move it around. i love love love tight gaps when i am using a TIG which i am on this project. Mig i usually leave a little bigger gap for some reason i seem to get better results that way. and i weld away. you can watch the weld flow into the parent metal alot better with a tig that helps with the under cut also you can beat the hell out of a tig weld and surrounding area a ton more then a mig with out fear of cracking. but usually i give the welded area a few taps before i grind and its gets me most of the way there. also my compressor **** the bed a while back and i dont have the $$ to get it fixed so im using a electric grinder with a 5 inch 36 grit disc. i cut the rubber backer down by about 3/4 of an inch maybe more and it greatly reduced the amount of grinder marks i had. its kinda hard to explain in words what i do but hope it gives ya a general idea.

    thanks hdonly, autobodyed ,117.

Thanks Pimpin i have the commie roller . can ya give me a little more detail on putting it through the roller. just put it through with real light pressure and the smallest die? i dont wannt end up with another bead and having to buy another set of these ****tily made panels. also you mention making panels how would ya go about getting such a big bead?

    thanks K13!

1 thing i learned today is you can beat the living hell out of 16 gauge sheetmetal.

heres another poorly made non fitting heater hole patch panel.

    the mess im working with

    fit

notice the extra 1/8 inch of bead

the blue line is how wide it should be.i hammered the hell outa the area on the other side of the blue line to flatten it out so the beads matched

    the bottom piece really ****ed

you can see really how much i beat the living hell out of the metal

    what i ended up with

cant wait to see what it looks like all welded up!!

    Hey Flop,

The fire wall looks ''total -pro" like!

On parts like that where you can see both sides once they're installed I like to be as careful as possible about leaving few ,if any, tool marks in the part. Some customers get *****y unless both sides look mirror smooth once it's all said & done. The less clean up work ya have to do, the closer ya come to finishing the job under bid. I like pieces of hard wood like maple or oak ( snagged from shipping pallets ) ground into shape to match the parts' shape, or round stock pieces of plastic like nylon, again, ground to shape and used as a calking iron. These both leave little if any tool marks on the part.

oh, yeah, thanks for the cool words-

    one again thanks pimpin!

man i tried everything i had in the shop to get it to move before i went to the business end of the body hammer! i think if i was dealin in lighter gauge sheetmetal it would been a waaay dif story.since the firewall was 16 gauge i had a hell of a time getting it to do anything that involved curving with out m***ive amounts of force. but atleast this is a time and materials job!!!
