Well, I say drive it for a bit get to know it then go for it if ya need. Nothing makes you fall outa love like a long drawn out project ya never got to drive
Take the interior trims out of it first. They may get burnt with the sparks, also the gl*** needs to come out. Then SLAM THAT ROOF DOWN BABY.I havent done a chop for years since I had my Resto Business. There is nothing like it.Have you looked at the 49 Chevy Roof line she is begging to get down. Get all your sill rust, and front floors are probably gone too.Get all you major body work done first.Even get a new Ch***is packing kit fitted line up all the doors and Guards make the car fit up well.Tap a few edges in and out on the panel make them lin up. Only then are you ready to do the chop. When I was going to chop my 57 Olds .My brother in laws brother Billy had a good idea.Take some side shots of the car and roof. Then inlarge them to A3 size. (1) Get about 12 done, then cut away with the scissors and clear sticky tape them back together. (2)This will enable you for one to see if and where the pieces actually go back together neat. (3)It also gives you a first chance to make the cuts in the right place. (4) If you dont like the shape then cut up another bit of paper. (5) My thoughts Lay back the front pillars only slightly. (6) you got to make the roof longer as it goes down the hill at the back window.Take a cardbourd pattern of the shape and go to the junk yard and cut out a roof skin of the shape you like it to be. (7) NEVER CUT DOWN OR ACCROSS THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOF.!! (8) Cut about 150 to 200 mm in from the edge of the roof to add pieces in this gives you a smaller repair area and you don't wreck the hard to make or repair centre of the roof, also keeps you repair area within arms length. So you can Panel Beat your weld area. LOL to much to explain,,,, If its too hard send it to me and I will do it for you LOL, enjoy.
NO, NO , NO DO SOMETHING ELSE TO CUSTOMIZE IT. FOR CHRIST'S SAKE WHY DO YOU BLOKES WANT TO CHOP EVERY FRIGGIN' CAR? YES, I AM YELLING. Rod
Spoil sport! Sheesh new guy, do a search, there are plenty of progress shots of fleetlines getting chopped on this site. Apart from which, this is the intro section. Try that first.
welcome. You can chop the top fairly easy,it's the rest that takes a lot of work, gl***, window trim , door tops, then there is the trunk lid not an easy deal. Thats why most are left stock. I like a very minor cut. But the best fleetline of that vintage that I have seen belongs to a guy name House. It's stock in apperance and just clean. You can spend plenty of loot just trying to get it clean. Roger
