I am thinking of trading my 50 4 door fleetline for a 67 catilina. The catilina is a 400 small block car with less work needed. The motor is not the original. It is a solid car but it has the old 8 lugs wheels on it. My 50 is rough shape needing quaters and a whole lot of body work. It is all original minus interior. The guy is willing to pay for the 67 to be deliver to me and the 50 deliver to him. No out pocket on my end. ***le for ***le. Do you think this is a good trade. Any advice would help. The catilina does have the 8 lug rims and Fins. I have to verify the block numbers to make sure it is a 400 pontiac and not a chevy 400. I had a pontiac 400 in a truck of mine and loved the motor. The catilina is a solid car. I will have some photos saturday. I love my fleetline but time and space are the big reason to move onto a turn key car.
never could figure why someone would ask another person s opinion on a vehicle trade ?, everyones taste are different , what one may like ,another might not . what if some one talks you into trading for a rolling turd ? we dont have to drive it or ever look at it unless some build pictures get posted lol
I think what would make my decision would be the answer to this question. Will I get the 50 fixed in a reasonable amount of time? If you don't think you have either the time or money to get the 50 going, then the trade is a good idea. Just my opinion....
Your in the rust belt so without pictures we dont know how rough either car is. But i did live in ohio and can only imagine. Using my imagination id say yes if your car is tipically rusted out and the pontiac is in far better shape. On the other hand i dont like catalina's. A Tempest, GTO, or Lemans and id say hell yea!
If the Catalina has the aluminum wheels and the big bolt pattern with the radial fins..........TRADE. The wheels and brake drums off that car are worth more than your whole car. Frank
Back in 1976 I had a '67 Catalina 4 Dr. "Winter car" with the high compression 400 2 bbl., TH400 and 2 something gears. It would bury the speedometer in about half a mile and got an honest 21 MPG on bias ply snow tires cruising at 65 MPH. With modern electronic ignition, overdrive and radial tires it would make a great daily driver today. I totalled it one rainy morning but if I could find a decent one I'd snag it in a heartbeat. If by "400 small block" you mean it has a Chevy 400 engine though, don't bother, they ruined it.
Well I don't like either since I love my Fords . OK the Chev you have now is very popular and easy to get parts for . Now the Catalina is a big boat with a 400 in it . You also have all that weight with the Pontiac also . Now if you are into cruising and long highway trips , the Catalina would really be nice . If you have a large family it would be nice . Other than that I have seen and driven both cars and each have their points . Personally I would keep and fix what you have now since you know what needs to be done to it . The Pontiac might look OK but there is allot more that can be hidden and trying to find parts for that car will not be cheap or easy . Now I am giving my opinion on 2 cars I haven't ever seen ! Pictures would help 1000% for the best choice to go with . Keep what you have ! You already know what you have now ! Retro Jim
Keep the Chevy work on it as the money comes in, fleetlines are a very popular body style and make great cruisers. CRUISER
Good advice from everone. The catilina is a 2 door. 8 lug car. I will post pics sat. I have to go look at the car and get the block numbers.
If the car is as described, i would trade. i have nothing against the chevy. with the exception of having too many doors. i do however like the pontiacs, loved my 66 catalina. it does make me wonder why this guy would want to trade and pay for shipping on both vehicles. seems a little off to me.
Before you trade, look over the frame on the Pontiac real good, that era of large GM cars had some serious issues with frame rot and the top of the body could look great. There is a gentleman around here that has a very nice looking 66 or 67 Pontiac with a frame nearly non-existent, they tend to rot just behind the front tires, along the side rails and in front of the rear tires. The one your looking at may be fine, but look it over well, just in case. Gene
If you had a pontiac 400 you should know that they look nothing like a small block chevy. You might want to check the numbers to make sure its a 400 of whichever it is, but the pontiac vs chevy engine question should be obvious.
Trade. Here are the numbers to ID your Pontiac engine: http://www.yearone.com/updatedsinglepages/id_info/pontiacengineid/pontengid1.html
Like low buget said chevy vs pontiac is easy. Is the water crossover separate from the rest of the intake manifold (not solid) and you can see the valley pan under the intake it's Poncho. I love the long fastback rooflines of the 67 big GM cars.
I personaly wouldn't want to work on either. The 2dr Pontiac would be easier to sell or trade for something that you do want. You should be able to tell if it's a Pontiac motor just by looking at it. Whether it's a 400, Look at the side under the block, everyone that I have had has been stamped 350 or 400 or 455.
Do what makes you happy...everytime I go for Chinese food my wife and family try to do the whole you order this and I'll order that and we can all share...screw that I don't wany any noodles...I want hot and ****ky Kung Pao 'cause that's what makes me happy (and sweat)
