I am slowly becoming an authority on removing dashes and accessories on these 55 Chev trucks. My wife always wanted a 55 Shorty and through a stroke of luck we acquired 2 this year! The first one is a true barn find with 30 thousand miles which we bought of the 2nd owner, it has the typical rusted out cab corners and the lower hinge pockets are shakey too. We brought it home and gutted it. Well on the net we found another 55 that was way closer to being on the road, the only thing is, is that its a GMC but already subbed with 1980 Firebird clip and came with a ton of extra panels and goodies. Plus it had the cab corners done and basically read for paint. In other words way closer to the road. Well the fun part is this, Madam (my wife) wants a 55 CHEV not GMC so that involves removing the GMC dash. Anyways the GMC dash came out easy, 2 zip discs and it was out in less than an hour. The 55 Chev corpse/cowl dash remover was a bitch! Over 2 hours, 5 discs and 1 fried grinder and it was out... Good times!
This is the only forum I've ever joined...so I'm learning my way around. If I'm out of line as to where I am supposed to be posting or if I'm doing something wrong, I hope somebody will help me...here are some more pics of the trucks and my hearse...oh yeah and my beloved oil cans from yesteryear...
Welcome to the site. I like the truck, looks like alot of work but that is part of the fun. Keep us posted with your progress.
Your Wife must know my wife. When I met my wife she was driving a 55 Chevy truck with a GMC dash, actually it was probably a 55 GMC with Chevy sheetmetal. Anyhow, I convince her that a panel truck would be better than a pickup so we track down a 55 Chevy panel truck and get rid of the GMC, only thing is she insisted on having that GMC dash in the panel truck, so I did the opposite of what you did..
Too weird! We are having blast doing this, these cold Alberta winters kind of slow us down, we are in the garage every Saturday for 5 or 6 hours with the wood stove a blazin! We want it done for the the May 24th weekend, well, up and running with interior and engine bay cherried out. The rest we will pick away at over the summer...
Cad, since you already introduced yourself on the 17th on the intro page you are fine with this posting. You should have named it different, like 55 chevy truck build or something. It would make it easier for members to check out and answer question you might have. Hope this helps, I'm new to this also.
welcome from ohio, momma has to have chevy not gmc and we all know if momma isnt happy then nobodys happy
if there is two ways to do something my wife always picks the hardest, most time consuming or costly, route!... almost always for the better... but don't tell her that.
I've had three 55-59 Chev trucks and I have put the GMC dash in every one of them - so much better looking (looks much more business-like than the passenger car-derived Chev V-panel). Just my opinion obviously - wife gets what the wife wants, you're a smart man. dj
