My car is ready to go to Danté over at Black Widow Kustoms. 4 to 6 weeks later, it will be ready to roll into the paint booth. (Har****, let's make some plans...) Anyway, I want an alternative textured paint such as a suede/matte/satin. I've seen some nice stuff on motorcyles, even by manufactures lately. What would be best for a daily driver with maintence in mind? How do you maintain it, since waxing doesn't seem doable? Color scheme, by the way is going to be copper and white. Unless I change my mind again. white interior white roof with heavy flake matte copper body
My car is in primer, but I just wash it like I do a "painted" car. I have read that several other HAMBers do, in fact, wax their satin/flat finishes, and they say it works real good. I'd have Dante shoot you a test panel that you can wax and test out in the weather to see what happens.
my dad told me about a guy he knew "back in the day" who had a white suede car that he used to clean with Comet! My semi-gloss dupli-color black Trailer Queen gets the hose treatment & that's about it. If I'm feeling generous, I take her to the DIY carwash. I will tell you, drive-in parking lot dust is a ***** to clean off .
PPG's Flexed-n-Flat has about the best look out there(in my opinion). Don't let the "Flexed" part fool you. It sprays, looks and feels just like normal paint. It lays down nice without being blotchy or uneven. It also seems to be a little clearer than adding flattener to regular clear allowing the metallic or pearls to maintain their reflective qualities better. Flat, suede, satin, matte paint jobs can be a real h***le to maintain. Scuffs and scratches show up like a sore thumb and other respraying, theres nothing that you can do to remove them. You can't wax it without changing appearance of the "as sprayed" look, you can't rub it if it has a bunch of dirt in it. About all you can do to it is wash it and be carefull with it.
DP90 is kinda of a satin finsh,,,,,but if you want it to keep lookin' that way you need to wax it Before you wash it! I'm told that John Deere Blitz black enamel will do the trick and hold up well! HRP
I've never had a nice even coat of primer on any of my cars (always comes out rough because I don't have a decent gun), but I have a lowrider bike that is flat black, I wipe it down with WD40 every now and then. I've heard of people doing that to their cars as well. Seems to do the trick.
Yeah, but don't ever plan on painting a car that you rub down with WD-40. It is the enemy of decent paintjobs! I swear one drop of that stuff will fisheye an entire car, no matter HOW many times you wipe the car down with wax & grease remover! I know some body shops that don't allow WD-40 on the premises for that reason!
Best fast wax I have found. Spent two years in waxes till I found someting that works. 3M spray detail wax.
Mine is sprayed with DP90 and I use windex to clean it, People have told me that would ruin the paint but it's been three years and still looks good. It's great I have one cleaner for the car, does gl***, chrome, and paint.
I used some **** by Dupont called Nason Ful-base b/c in black. I took 3/4 of a gallon, added 1/3 of reducer and sprayed my 58 chev in it. ITS BEEN GREAT! I can wipe it clean, nothing sticks and IF I feel REAL cool, I can windex it and it shines right up. Altogether, with my cheap Harbor Frieght sprayer, I paid $50 for it all. Good deal! It doesn't flake off, doesn't drip or run, I DON"T have to dry it after I wash it and my wrench fetcher can draw all over it with chalk and she wipes right off! Best stuff EVER!! I used flat black the first time I painted it.....****ed bad! But she would shine right up when I'd rub motor oil on her, some guys used Wd-40, but thats too much $....now I don't worry about it at all ** Brandy
Oh yeah I'd post a pic of it, but I'm still not smart enough to post pictures....my ****on doesn't ****on!
Hey Slide, are you thinking of Armor All instead of WD-40? I know Armor All is nearly impossible to get off, and it will fisheye, but can't remember having trouble with WD-40. LeGrasta--if you want a matte type finish, try going to the paint supply and look at their color chip books....then look at the under the hood, under the trunk finishes. They are flatter and it is paint, not primer, so you can wash it, dry it, or whatever
Ls51-- Yeah, ArmorAll is way worse, but it seems there is some silicon or something in WD-40 that'll fisheye paint pretty bad, too. I agree that it's easier to clean off than ArmorAll, but it's still pretty mean. I guess I have just been around some real bad experiences that could only be blamed on new hires/ignorant people using WD-40. It's one thing to get it off bare metal, but the porous nature of primer is a different story.
There is a Honda motorcycle model "919" that comes in a matte green. If you get near a dealer, stop in and look at it. The green is cool, but the texture is what I'm after. I want that texture, in copper!
i have dp 90 on my 47 it has been there for 3 years now and i haven't done any thing to it.the only problem i have had is gr*** hoppers yes if those hit you at 70mph or better they leave a grease stain that won't come off. so i would try something with a sealer like a flat clear. i am going to look into that ppg product sounds pretty good.
Man, I'm tellin' ya, go with PPG's Flexed-n-Flat. It looks just like that bike. It's pretty cheap too. Have the painter spray out a test panel to see if you like it. You can add pearl to it as well to enhance the effect.
John Deere Blitz black is the way to go IMO. Very durable and lasts longer. If you have to touch up any areas, just go over it with fine steel wool in small circles. Helps even it out with the rest.
I just had my square bird painted with DP90 over in Huntington Beach. You can keep it looking good by just spraying it down with simple green and washing it off. The simple green cuts any grime or oil and doesn't leave a film. Scratch it with your finger nail and get a real ugly white stripe though..he he ..
