Trust me, me and the wife think about making the move too. People would think we're nuts to leave Hawaii, but this place does have its limits.

You missed it dude, and its because of your age, and how cities crack down on it. Not a put down at all - cause ya know i dig ya. Being in the area you live in Angelo's on State College was the IN place back in the eighties. My dad, friends , and I drove out there all the way from Riverside and it was crazy. Went out there a lot, and seeing cars lined up for blocks on both ends of the street was right outtta A/G !

  4. Yep, was there ALL the time, and then the younger kids (I was a ripe old 20 something) came along and were drinking openly in the parking lot, peeing on the buildings and doing burnouts on State College and then wondered why the cops shut it down.
Man those were some fun days til the bastards ruined it!

That is why I like events like the Great Labor Day Cruise at the OC Farigraounds. http://www.occa-inc.com/
2½ days of non-stop cruising. Drive for a while, watch for a while. I like driving events better than sitting events.

  7. Wanna cruise in So Cal? Wednesday night Bob's Broiler in Downey has a cruise in. The street rodders gather at 605 and Alondra. Take a trip through the Street rod guy's cruise night and return to the Broiler. Wave at each other as you pass between the two places. Cars look better in motion. That's why we run flipper hubcaps or spoked wheels. They look bitchen rolling.

I agree everyone wants to sit in a shopping center parking lot . Here in las vegas its just to dam hot in the summer . I only go to car shows that are on the grass . I may be old but not stupid .

Gas is too expensive!! and the cops just don't let you do it without harassing you anymore!

  11. I agree with you Jeff, cause I drive my Merc and my truck all the time, and RARELY see another old car. I think people are addicted to the creature comforts in their daily drivers! Almost everybody I know with an old car has a newer daily driver! The 38 Pick-up is my daily and the Merc gets driven whenever I feel like cruising.

don't worry who else is around...yesterday I got in the wagon in my avitar bored and needing to clear my head, so I started driving south on the 101, then took the 405 north to the 5 up the grapevine to frasier park, filled up with gas, then took Mt Pinos road through the snow (the drop down from Mt. Pinos to the 166 below snow level was full of porches and corvettes ripping through the curves)to the 166, had lunch in New Cuyama at the burger barn, then took Tepesquet canyon road to foxen canyon to clark ave and back home. OVer 300 miles I guess...I saw one hot rod 30's pickup on the whole trip any that's it! Didn't really care had fun!

I had the chance to cruise both areas of Whittier Blvd (thats East L.A. for the lowriders and east Whittier for the Hot Rodders) and it was a great time but I am not 20 anymore and it's not the 50s, 60s, or 70s anymore. As much as I love old cars, times change and the past is a memory.

  18. Wow ! Now thats a cruise man . I bet that felt great and im sure that drive cleared your head.

California used to be full of neat cars - they were everywhere!

Maybe these days California has the neatest ricers -

Who knows? I have no interest in that kind of thing -- any more than the ricers have any interest in classics and hot rods...

i'm from the riverside area and in the late 80's all the way up to the end of the 90's i used to always see a car or two on the road. now forget it. i used to drive my 41 ford pickup and my 53 merc everyday thats all i had to drive and i loved it. i think either those rodders and custom guys i used to see either passed on or cashed out when the housing market went crazy and moved back to the state they left to come make it in Ca when they were young. i remember if i was driving on the week end and i seen a group of cars going down the road i would turn around and fallow them and sure enough they would lead me to some kind of car gathering.

Ya it was nice except I did get a little worried when I first saw the snow and ice. If you or anyone else is looking for a nice drive home from WCK Santa Maria that isn't the 101 the drive up Mt. Pinos road is awesome!

This pretty much says it all . One thing you gotta remember is that back in the '60's when we were cruising Pasadena Bobs Big Boy , Whitttier , VanNuys etc . we were'nt all driving hotrods and customs . I used to cruise in my '56 Nomad that was 10 years old at the time . My buddy had a '64 HiPerf fairlane and another had a '65 Malibu w/ a 350 , 4-spd. Those were fairly new cars. But the real thing , that I don't think you'll ever get back is the numbers of people and cars that were out cruising. The closest that I've seen is 10 years ago at the GG pleasanton , when you could cruise ( as in really drive) down the street in "old town". That lasted about 2 years until the local law put a stop to it . Unfortunatley all we have left are destination runs and , or static cruises in parking lots . If I see you at Chrismans some Wed. , I'll bend your ear with some tales of cruises past .

I drive my car everyday and everywhere. I see a few others here and there driving around but not much. I'm not sure what it is but I see a bunch of cars every Saturday morning driving by my work off Hawthorne in Torrance

And there's the reason you don't see old cars on the road. Bunch of guys bitching on the internet that there's nowhere to go or nowhere to cruise or no old cars on the road. Or- it's not like it was back in the day.
    Fucking excuses.

Stop complaining, call a few buddies, get your ass in a seat & drive.

I drive somewhere every weekend. Saturday I went to a car show. After several hours- I got bored. I got 2 other buddies & we left the show & drove up to the mountains. Why? For a Corona & a bowl of chili. Nice change of scenery hitting the snowline in my roadster. Sunday- we drove to the beach for lunch, up & down PCH & then dropped in on a friend & had a drink on his 85 ft boat moored at his patio. About 250 miles give or take for the weekend. I saw lots of old cars on the road- both days!

So- you can bitch or you can drive. Which sounds like more fun?
You won't see any old cars on the road from your couch.

I cruised Whittier & Van Nuys back in the 60's too but I'm still driving. What's your excuse?

Times have changed here Im sure and people do find it easier to jump in the new daily driver and run to the store I think. I am new to SoCal and ill tell you this, back home in the northeast where everything gets put away from Nov1 to May (6mnths!) then the other 6 months are a mixute of on/off rain and our "summer days" are about as warm as the weather im experiencing here now w a few hot/humid days thrown in.

So my point is I cannot and will not let myself find it eaiser to jump in my new vehicals, I can now drive my Chevy and ride my bikes all the time and year round wether its to run errands/ go for a cruise up ur amazing PCH or hit all the awesome every week car shows! Bottom line here is I and many others come from a place where CA is envied by all for the great car culture we have...so its our decision to keep that car culture rolling....Ill do my part, how about you??

It seems like although there are'nt any "traditional" cruise spots any more , there is still a lot of great places to drive your hotrod / custom. Whenever I'm driving my roadster ans I see lots of bikers out having a great time , I can;t help but wonder ,, why don't you see that many rods and customs . I mean there's lots of cars stuck in garages , just not being used very much . In the last year I've done about 8k mi. and enjoyed every one of them .

And here I was thinking there was to much to do. Escondido cruise nights, el cajon, Santee...etc. One every night of the week during the summer. then there's the mountain cruises.
Last weekend was King of the track at Barona. Crap! I need to buckle down and actually do some work. My 37 could have been 90 % done already.
