It's a long way down the road but I'm thinking about cowl steering in the '30 roadster. Plan is a '32 ch***is with the 354 HEMI and a four speed, so I may go with swing pedals as well. I like the Rolling Bones front end setup too. Gas tank is gutted and will be in the trunk so I have lots of room for things. Most likely I'll have a hoop bent like the MG-TD had to mount things to. Open to ideas on what box to use, pedals etc, photos are always great. Happy Thanksgiving!:)

P.M. me and I'll discuss my conversions of Saginaw gears to make a " racy" looking cowl unit. Have done over 15 so far.

The Bones use a Schroeder box as well as I and they work great seeing that they were designed for the task. I'm glad to see that a hoop is going to be incorporated in the design, there's a huge amount of torque generated offa the pitman arm. I used WillWood swing pedals with Tilton m/c's seeing that they were even smaller in size than the WillWoods. Drove the truck for 2 years before selling it with no problems.

I built a two hoop set up out of 1"x0.065 chrome-moly for my cowl steering, I used a schroeder box and made swinging pedals with needle bearings inside, used ford master cylinders on the firewall (1 for brakes 1 for clutch). haven't driven the car yet, but it sounds like you want to do something similar. It bolts down to the original body to frame holes of the model a. Check out my photo album for more pictures.

Nice detail work on that toeboard flange with the lighting holes. Good question John, thanks for asking. [IMG]

  8. Can you post some pictures for the rest of us to see?

Clark used a 30s GM Pickup box in his RPU. I found one and used it in my old touring.

I am also interested in the saginaw gear conversion, (it would have to look good) the Schroeder box is expensive and the prices for them on e-bay are stupid. You are better off buying a new one directly from Schroeder made to your measurements. My box has an 8:1 ratio, but I haven't driven it to give you real feedback. Schroeder now make a ratio reducer (also expensive) but i think someone made their own on the hamb if you do a search.

I've never seen a closeup of the inside of a Schroeder steering box, just know that sprints and midgets use them. Before that everyone modified a Franklin p***enger car steering box. I've got an untouched Franklin I've been saving for a Dirt Car build, maybe the Roadster will get it. Oh, sorry that photo got blown up so large don't know how that happened.

  11. I used a BMW 2002 box that I got off ebay for $75. I bent up a hoop for a mount, The hoop bolts to the frame and will hold swing pedals.

The Schroeder boxes are real quick ratios but once you get used to it it's no big deal. You learn to steer only when rolling real quick and they handle like a slot car at freeway speed.

  14. Yes I have a build thread, check my profile I don't know how to post it.

I have one of Dale's units, looks old timey, good ratio, and very nicely done.

No, I've shifted gears over to the Lyndwood rail restoration.
