couple weeks ago I posted pics of this tee roadster a old timer had. It was a done deal ya know horse trade some stuff for it with some cash. then one of his buddies started hyping him up. that out in cali he could get a four grand for the body. what a *** he did not return my calls or emails cause he was backing out on the price he said. long story short My buddy went and bought it for a couple hundred more. Thats right a church going guy did not have the guts to even tell me he wanted more for the car. Anyway disgusted with the car already me and the diamond one decide to throw some parts at it for resale as a roller. " originally I wanted it for my son for a first car but the salty taste in my mouth says turn it". So here are some pics after the first few hours of work. It's sits too high for me and I hate flatheads but dave says it's cool. I guess it aint to bad we are part of the jalopy journal right hahahaha check it

I feel that way about Hemi engines. Remember the 392 deal i had? sheesh
So who actually ended up buying it? And why didn't they offer it to you since they knew you wanted it? Maybe i am reading this wrong....... Anyway, back to the car, it is a little on the tall side. As far as the flathead, dollar for dollar you can hardly build a lesser performing engine.

    Let's be fair...
Obviously, the later OHV mills are better performers. They should be. They are offspring of its design. Flatties are older tech. But they look friggin awesome and you just CAN"T get that sound anywhere else!

The car is cool. I dig the stance. Looks more old-timey. (I'm not a big fan of hotrods s****ing pavement, that's what kustoms are for.)

Maybe you can call the car "Yankee Rose". That would be cool.

I just don't see why guys get enjoyment out of bashing one of the most used nostalgic traditional engines in the history of American hotrodding.
If we are here to obtain speed and MPG, thats another story. The only reason most guys prefer not to use the flathead is because of the learning curve and cost of build.
Flatheads by far are the coolest engine ever made. I have worked on and owned smallblocks and in-lines my whole life. Absolutely nothing compares to the cool factor that flatheads and maybe an occasional Hemi creates.:D

  11. PeteJoe hit the nail on the head...you can't build a better lookin engine than a dressed flathead.

Nosebleed's ***, I want it:D Trades? I would happily cruise it around powered by my flathead.

I bought a set of valve covers from rstysht the other day and was showing the pics to my friend. He asked if I was using them in my Coupe. My reply? Real hot rods don't have valve covers:D

the funny thing is that abomber had that thing put together like that in the same time it took me to change manifolds and install the first pipe on my 59!

I have visited many friends and states many hours away from me. I have done this with SBF and SBC power. Last year alone I went to Indy 3 times, Louisville, Chicago Area 3 times, and Milwaukee all with my trusty SBC. I didn't see anyone driving their flatty powered car to all of the shows I went to.

I am still waiting for someone to come visit me driving their flatty powered vehicle. It hasn't happend yet, so if you all keep bragging on how great the flatty is, I expect to see one in my driveway this summer that didn't come from a town that is only 30 miles away.

I have a buddy, **** Blaine, that drives his Ardun flatty all across the country but he also spends boo-koo dinero to keep it running.

You can sling all the **** at me about how you drive your flatty powered cars across the country, but until you pull into MY driveway I could give a ****. Seeing is believing.

I agree with Drew. I am too cheap to build one. Yeah they look cool, but I don't own a trailer to haul it to the show.

I don't get the "You can't drive a flathead anywhere" comments. What did people do when they were new and they wanted to go across country on vacation? Did they say, "uh oh. We can't because the valves are in the block." Um. No.

What about the purple '32 roadster built in 50 days with Flathead in LA last year that drove out to Austin for the Round-up. I also saw him Saturday morning and his fan belt had broken, so he was driving it around austin with no fan in the morning. Sure didn't seem like an unreliable motor to me!

    Plowboy,
The first time we met was either at Louisville or the Pumpkin run in Cincy. That was a total round trip of 12 hours with stops only to get gas and eat.
My aging memory.. please forgive me. But you may not have known how I got to those places. In my original 60,000 mile flathead that to my knowledge was never rebuilt. From the time I redid my 37 two years ago, i have logged 7000-9000 miles on it. Until I lost oil pressure coming back from Cincy last year. Now I have a very healthy replacement. The same can happen to any smallblock.
I may not get there at 70 -75 mph consistantly. But you bet we will soon have you over in the dark side. :D PJ
Now if you want to put up some money for the trip. You'll be buying me beer and potatoes chips in your driveway.

(maybe he doesn't know what one looks like!! )
Maybe he should pull OUT of HIS driveway and come to Bonneville!! :) :)

Just for the record, I have a Model A with a flathead V-8 that i drive alot. Its been from Indy to Milwaukee, Sycamore IL (numerous times), Cincinnati, all over Indiana.... I have never had one bit of trouble and i even run a generator. Egads!!! I built the engine and agree wholeheartedly that nothing looks cooler or sounds better (ceptin' a Hemi, maybe). Its just a fact, they can't breath well in the stock configuration. (naturally aspirated). I certainly am NOT a flathead hater, quite the contrary, its just i spent a bunch of loot on a moderate performing engine. I knew what i was getting into and for this car it is the right engine to me. I just wouldn't do it again. BTW, my car is the one next to Triumph Terror's bike in his post on the Indy World of Wheels. And i woulda drove to Plowboys house last summer, but i took the family camping and dont have a hitch on the A to pull the camper.

  26. Dont sell that car. Its nice to see a 'T with a turtle deck on it for once. And as for Flatheads, if you know how to build one they can be great engines. Dont forget that they were the most popular mills around until OHV V8s became popular in the early '50s. Good luck!

Oh my god as stated in a early post some where on this board"Ryan when are you installing the drama meter on the new HAMB"LOL Damit randy quit lying to these guys thats the best lookin HEMI I have ever seen disguised as a flat motor.LOL I always thought the old sayin was my flathead has plenty of power cause it aint used none yet.Somebody said somethin about never being at bonnieville before well I aint been but I do know it took a good mopar guy DLI(**** Landy Industries) to make a flat motor run and that was after extensive work. Not down on flat heads they are period correct for certain cars and back in the day they were like night and day compared to a banger motor.Heres a pic of Randys A which has got a sweet sound flat motor and it starts and purrs like a kitten. People he aint no hater he just tells it like it is and if the man owns one he ought to know.

    Flathead HMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!
Lets see? High dollar engine hard to find parts on the road if need to be.
I have owned a few flatheads and they do look cool and are a very traditional mill in fact I have one in my drive way now and two in storage. but are they worth it?? Every body has there own opinion and I dont think that they are. They cost four time what a sbc cost and are not as practical no matter how you look at it. Right now I have a rebuilt sbc with six 97s ready to go in my car with less than $1200.00 in it and can buy parts off the shelf any time it breaks down.

The flat head is a big part of history with Hot Rods and they are cool but dont knock the sbc They are also a big part of the hot rod history. My own opinion if I had to build something besides a sbc it would be an OLDS motor It would cost about the same as a flathead but it would be worth it when I got ready to p*** somebody or to do burn outs and run the piss out of it.
Take the time table back to 1957 The small block chevy was 2 years old and they were starting to replace the flatheads in the hot rods. WHY???
so I guess my point of veiw do what you want dont bash the other guy its all about love for the Hot Rod.
