Biggest " TRADITIONAL " car engine ever?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Traditions Racing, Nov 29, 2010.

  1. Mods, if this is not HAMB worthy, please delete, but only after reading the whole deal, thanks. In 1912 FIAT had what was known as " the beast ". I had my calculator out earlier, and did some converting for you folks, hope you enjoy- THIS IS NOT MADE UP. The "BEAST" was 28 Litres and had 4 cylinders. In C.C.'s thats 28,353 cubic centimeters. 7088 c.c. per cylinder. A new Harley is 1450 c.c. for 2 cylinders. O.K., now with my calculator, that means- a 1,730 cubic inch- 4 cylinder. If your still with me that's 432.54 c.i. per cylinder. Bore size is 190 m.m., and the stroke was 250 m.m. For those metrically challenged- thats a bore of 7.48" and a stroke of 9.84". To give you an idea, a 302 Ford is 4.000" bore and a 3.000" stroke and of course 8 cylinders. Stay with me now, a 572 B.B.C. engine is 4.500" bore and a 4.500" stroke and 8 cylinders. If you took 3- 572 inch B.B.C.'s and hooked them all together you would still only have 1716 cubic inches. And of course 24 cylinders. This was a real car, and a real engine, that was raced in Europe around 1912. There are pictures out there, but I don't know how to bring them over to the HAMB, if the mods are O.K. with this post, maybe someone can share a picture of the worlds biggest car engine ever. Is a 1912 FIAT really a "TRADITIONAL" engine? More realistically, I'd have to go with a 409 Chevy or a 421 Pontiac, TRADITIONALLY. DD

That FIAT engine was made for an Airship. Like a Blimp. It was kind of the Big Al of it's day.

Look at the front end, with the size of the car, I would say that he hit a train and just kept on going. Didn't even stop to trade insurance.

28 liters and 300 hp...That works out to less than 11 hp per liter. We've come a long way, baby.

  24. love the exhaust - what the hell did that sound like?

with the amount of torque that must have been produced it's a wonder it didn't just flip itself over!

Biggest part of the car is the motor, therefore, we have a genuine Hot Rod here!
