just bought this S&W tach off evil bay....needing to figure out which wire goes where ect..seller claims it didn't require a sending unit .anyone recognise it ??? or point me somewhere to help figure it out??thanks
If there is no sending unit there us usually a red, black and green wire Red would go to switched B+, black to ground and green to the -side of coil
that's the way i remember most older tachs to wire in...still waiting for it to get here..just thought i'ld check here,,like i said, never seen one with the green hash marks... on another note, did S&W sub out their tachs??the above reference to china and japan made is why i ask the seller stated it didn't require a sender, but.....been lied to before on evil bay...
red , orange, gray and black...opened it up (removed the rear cover), and found no numbers printed or stamped in or on it...
Looks like 3 wires if so it is self contained and doesn't need a sender. I can't tell much from the pics and this is the long way around a simple problem. Never the less if I had it here I could figure out how to wire it up for you. Sorry for the ****py solution but its out there if you need it.
can't find any reference to this set of numbers..nor can i find a s % w tach with these wire colors...
I have an old Autometer tach so I went online and got a phone number for them. I talked to (a human) tech department and got all the info I needed including the period of production. I found out that mine was made between '57 and '72, perfect fit for my '67 Nova Wagon. ****The bottom line is obtain a contact number for S&W and talk to them. Their the ones that would know or could archive the information. It'll be cheaper than "frying" the thing!****
Let me go take a look at the tach in my Belaire. The gray should be for the light red should go to switched power and the black is ground. But let me take a look at my belaire to be sure. It'll only take a minute.
I'm confused - first off, I'll ***ume you mean S-W (Stewart-Warner), not S&W (Smith and Wesson). Second...why would you call AutoMeter to get info on an S-W tach, and then still comment that you need to call S-W? Your wire colors seem pretty typical, and several posters have given a reasonable verbal schematic of where the wires go. dj
I agree red should be switched power and black should be ground. That leaves signal and light.Use an ohm meter and check continuity between black and either of the other two wires.Remove the light bulb and retest.Whatever reading goes open will be the light wire and the other must be going to the coil.
Ok I checked the Belaire in my drive its wired minus the signal wire. The gray is the light and the orange is the signal. My tach is an RAC but they were all pretty standard and see as how yours has the same color wires logically it would be the same. So if you go red power, black ground, orange signal and gray dash light you should be good to go.
O.K. I accidently put a "&" instead of a "-" because the threads originator put a "&". Secondly, as my posting clearly states, I was simply saying that I contacted Autometer who had info on my Autometer tach and that he should contact "Stewart-Warner" for info on his tach. Its all right there in black & white. Also I have found that not everybody that is here on the H.A.M.B. is an expert and "simply checking" with the company that obviously made the tach is the best solution. Nobody here has an idea what this guy paid for this tach, so if it "frys", everybody else can just go.... OOPS!
well i ain't good with the opps..........took it to the shop today and run continuity...oragne and black for the lite....so much for the simalarities between a RAC and a Stewart Warner tach........but thanks for the effort.........
