One of the local teens my friend calls his "Greaser in Training" just got his first car, a late 60's early 70's four door Chrysler. The owner told him it might have a broken motor mount so he comes by to show me his New car and check out the m/m. So I tell him to get in and Power Brake it a LITTLE! So he Blips the gas HARD!! the engine came at least a Foot of the drivers side mount. I thought it was coming out of there!!! The kid almost had a Heart Attack! YEP It's got a Broken Motor Mount..
Common. My 1968 300 had one, as did my 1968 Impala. Things were different in the old days: the first owner was more responsible for product testing than today. Cosmo
This might make a good case for bolting in a chain to hold the motor down if the mount breaks. I was reading about some motorhome or something that when the mount breaks, the motor falls to the ground. Great design. So the guy who wrote the article added a safety chain or chains. Kind of ****s if your motor falls out onto the highway doing 70.
A broken mount will definately get your attention. I have a 76 F100 truck with a 390 that has broke the left mount twice. Its now chained down, and so far, so good. Greg
We used to chain down those old 389's and 421's all the time. Poncho mounts were the worst. Great fun with tires smoking and the throttle pinned to the floor. You'll live if you can get to the key in time. Buddy did that backing out of his girlfriend's driveway in a 421 2+2. We went over a block backwards in a cloud of smoke before I could reach that damned key while pinned to the dash on the p***enger side.
That rubber sandwich mount on the '59-'60 is awful. I broke both on my '60 a few months apart. Luckily it didn't have anything power, so I could steer and stop after I killed it.... While I was waiting for new mounts from Kanter, I had the old ones in wrapped around with coathanger wire about 15 times. It worked okay, although I sure wouldn't have tried to race the car like that. Apparently they used them again on '69 Gran Prix's, too. Good thing my Dad bought a '70 instead. or I'd have killed myself driving that as my first car.
