Some of you may remember around this past April and May I was asking for your help to bring a few cars to my students first annual Pistons and Paintbrushes spring student art show. That whole thing was very last minute and a couple of people came with some A coupes. We had a decent turnout. This was the first time that my students their family and friends had actually attended their own spring show. It was really cool with Ed Roth and Von Dutch inspired art work all over the walls of the fine arts wing. Having a couple of hot rods greet them at the door was also really cool. The kids and everybody loved it. The coolest thing is that the administration loved it. Especially the Vice Prinicple who really likes older cars. He has been asking all year if we were going to do it again, and how he'd like to have a lot more cars there this time around. So I have started my planning much sooner. I don't have a date yet but I'm shooting for the same time as last year which was the middle of May. But this time I'm thinking it should be on a Saturday instead of a Friday evening. The thing is, that I have some very grandiose thinking going on in my head. I've never been to a show in Georgia that was focused on high quality traditional rods and customs. The Dixie Fried weekend was always fun and would have some nice cars, but usually some lower quality ones as well. Plus the atmosphere was more focused on entertainment and hooliganism. I want to do something similar to the Hot Rod Revolution. The focus being on my students' artwork and the cars. I'd like to have some control of the cars in attendance. I'd like to keep it pre 64 or 65 and in the traditional styles. Like I said. I've never seen a show like this in Georgia. Purely high quality traditional rods and customs. I love the idea. What do my fellow Georgians think?

What about the guys cars in the club you belong to. Whos going to be deciding if the cars are high quality or lower cl***?
I'm not in a club. My Dad and I have a few things but nothing worth showing. I guess I'll be the main judge of the quality of the car. I'm not looking for concours quality, but I'm looking to weed out the RRs and that type of stuff too. Just think about the current Hot Rod Revolution or the Round Up. I know what is nice. I understand polish doesn't equal nice and rust doesn't equal junk. Let me put it this way. I recently saw a local four door Mercury with a heavy chop, ostrich skins buckets, a desoto grill and 59 cad bumper. That car isn't getting in. It was tasteless. Last year I had a guy with Model A coupe that he had since the 50s. It has changed with him as he has aged. It now has IFS, radials, and bucket seats. The only visual que to a modern build is the IFS and radials. I'd love to have him back. He is a hotrodder from way back and has driven that car all over the country. As you can see I will be taking a lot of things into consideration.
I know this guy and he is legit. I helped him find the cars he had last year and hope he gets more this year, and maybe he can with an earlier start like this. I hope my roadster is finished, or at least roadworthy by then and if he'll allow it in, I'll be there! There are only a small number of cars here in this small town that can be considered tradiotional, so I hope he can get more from neighboring towns. Dave
Damn right you're roadster will be in there! I wouldn't have had any cars last year if it weren't for the DOM. I could never thank him enough.
Travis, How do you feel about cars like the only other guy that showed up, the street legal and registered, but far from finished Model "A" coupe? I can remember when that first coupe mentioned by you looked like that! I guess you and I need to sit down and talk over a beer or two, and get mutual on what I need to be looking for thay is within your parameters. Dave
I grew up in the area (Barnesville), and still go through there failry often, and frankly I don't remember seeing many high-quality traditional style hot rods or customs. Lots of hot rods, but very few that would meet that standard. Don't get me wrong, I think its a great idea...but I think I'd be a little less picky.
Just an opinion but you said this was for the kids and art, just having as you call them higher cl*** cars there, isn"t that alittle unfair to both the kids and the art.Building a car the way you want it is an expression of art and if every car built was perfect what would be the use? If every painting or drawing was the same how boring would that be.
Firstly, thanks for the replies. To answer DOM first. I have no issue with the other car in attendance. I liked it. I understand that these cars for many are in a constant state flux. Some may never "finish" them. I don't think mine will ever be "finished" either. I just want to see some cars that are built or are being built to the owner's highest standard. No RRs or PBRs or Camels. This will be held at a public high school. Brad, I think that I was wrong to say higher cl*** cars. What I really meant was that I am trying to eliminate the RRs and all of the white trashery that comes with them. Sorry if that offends anybody. But that's the way it is in this state. I've been seeing it for years. I'd love to see a whole bunch of patinaed deuces and A roadsters with bias plies, or have the Sam Barris' Merc. But I am totally aware of where I live and the cars surrounding me and that I am just a high school art teacher. That's not going to keep me from looking for the best cars in the area. As for being fair to kids. I feel that it is. Within art there are many who are expressing themselves. Some are better at it than others. I don't teach my kids about bad art. There is more to creating good art and building good cars than expression. You have to understand why something looks right or doesn't. I don't want my kids slapping something together, and I don't want them to see cars that have been slapped together. I want them to see well thought out and safe cars. My idea of traditional is a little different than many others. I think a lot of people confuse period correct with traditional. To me traditional has more to do with the way that the car is built than the parts that are on it. As far as I'm concerned DOM, both cars in attendance last year were traditional hot rods. And we should definitely get together for some beers and talk cars.
Ether that is very INTERESTING! If you're INTERESTED please let me know. I'm willing to help in anyway to get your car and others like it to Griffin High School come May. My first priority is to do something cool for my kids but a close second is to do something cool for hot rodding and customizing. Especially in the southeast (muscle car country) where it isn't as popular. But it is here. I've seen flashes of it. I want to see a lot full of clean traditionally cool cars. Something that everybody on the HAMB and elsewhere can recognize a great gathering of cars. I'm going to need your help too. My computer is now officially dead. I'm typing this from my parents house at the moment, but come next week it's back to work and I won't be able to post. I can read the HAMB from the school but I'm not about to log on. No way! So if you guys can help me out by bumping this thread during the week so that others can see it I would really appreciate it. I had a fellow HAMBer pm me some photos of his shoe box ford. It's nice and he is saying that he might be able to do it. DOM, you're roadster will be there finished or not. We'll make it happen. Come on guys. We can put together a really nice show.
Probably not as picky as you think. Tell me about your car/s or PM me some photos. Or just post them on this thread. Like I said before, I'm not looking for concours stuff. Just well thought out and safe cars. If you have radials I don't care. If you have some rust, I don't care. If you haven't got your back gl*** installed due to your fresh chop, I don't care. I want to see some cars with thought and effort. But I don't want intentionally bad builds, that are intentionally unsafe. That's what I mean by high quality. This isn't the GNRS.
Be prepared to field questions on "what's a traditional rods and customs" you'll be surprised by the responses you'll get. Just speaking from past experiences with cars people thought were traditional. (stockers, etc...)
Thanks for the advice Rob. I'm happy to field any questions. That means interest is being shown. I had forgotten about the library. I'm going to give you call soon David.
That link was just to a thread about the first show back in May. Nothing to worry about Tudor. Thank you for the interest though. If you and the rest of the SFCC could make it that would be really cool. David, I'm sorry that I have yet to call you. This teaching gig can be tough at times and I barely get the things done that I have to do on some days. I promise that I will be in touch soon.
Please be patient with me on the date guys. I have some things in the works that may play a determining factor in the date. I'm thinking by Monday or Tuesday that I will have something final. If we can make this show as good as it should be, then we may have something that can become an annual deal that we can be proud of.
I hate to say this. I've known it for a little while now...But there will not be a show. I just had too many students express disinterest. Maybe I was trying to force something on them. I really thought that enough of them enjoyed last year's deal to do it again though. I was playing around with the idea of doing the show on my own without any affiliation to the school. It seems that it might not be much of an idea though, with so many other cruise-ins during the spring and summer. If there is interest in still doing a gathering of purely traditional cars in the middle of Georgia I'm game, and I will organize it. Just let me know. It's something that I'd still love to do. Most importantly though, I want to thank everyone who was helping and willing to help me out with the Student Show. I really appreciate it, and it made me feel very proud to be affiliated with such great people. Thank you.
break out the acuras, vw's or whatever the hell kids think is cool these days. maybe then they would be interested.
