My Father for some reason decided he wanted a hot rod last fall. He bought a 1948 Ford Business Coupe that's pretty nice. I'd say it's halfway between a street rod and a hot rod. Altough he has plans to take the fancy pants greybeard **** off and make it more traditional. He's been frustrated that he can't find any clubs or organizations in Dayton, OH to hang out with and wrench and learn with. He has been going down to meet with some guys in Cincinnati once a month, but would like something with a little more involvement. Does anybody know of any good clubs in Dayton, OH? He's 58yrs old. Has a novice to intermediate level of of knowledge of working on cars, but I have been teaching him a lot of stuff, and he's eager to learn more. He's gotten bit by the bug and this is the most excited I've seen him about anything for a long time. He wants to get more involved. I don't think he's looking for the clubs were the 80yr old senior citizens sit in lawn chairs behind their cars on Sundays. He's looking for something where guys get together and wrench have a couple beers, talk, put on shows, etc. He has been helpful in organizing shows in the past, and likes that type of responsibility. If anybody knows of any clubs in the Dayton, OH area that sound like a good fit, please let me know so that I can have him look into them. I'd appreciate it.
Unfortunately here in Dayton Ohio there is a bunch who sit behind their cars in lawn chairs and I dont think there are any hot rod clubs but I could be wrong, there are a few cruise ins on wendsdays and fridays but the lawn chair sitters are there in force. I would like to find some people who would like to cruise more then sit like we did a few years ago. Jeff
Hey ,what the f--- wrong with grey beards man? Most grey beards I know stay in it when she goes sideways.Tell the oldman to go to kilkare race way on thursday test and tune about 5:00 pm and go to the tables in front of consesion stand and Stretch and his gang will be there watching the races and having a few.By the way he has a grey beard and a g***er henry J
You nailed it Jeff.... Model A Brian on here and i have been talking about the same thing.... He just moved here from NY. I guess they have a pretty decent club there. When there are more lawn chairs than cars, it is not a cruise, it is a sit-in. I would love to make Woodman drive come back to life like it was 15 years ago at Hail n Hearty and Hamburger Heaven and the A & W root beer stand.... Those were the days.... At least I remember them to be alot of fun, but then again, I was just getting out of high school, getting a license, etc. Where are they cruising now? I'd heard that Bosron's Pub on North Main has one on Wednesdays, or maybe it was the Steak N Shake in Englewood. I thought with Quaker State and Lube in Beavercreek something might blossom, like Bike night, but has yet to take form. Do you know the rotation of Cruise the Burg / Springboro / Franklin and Germantown for the summer? Again, there are many lawn chairs, but it can still be kind of fun... parking a jalopy next to a gold chainer can provide some entertainment. I have spent the last couple of years making babies into toddlers, now they're starting to get a little bigger, i can get out with them a little.... Back to the original topic of the thread, I know of no organized clubs in Dayton that don't include sport compacts and coffee can exhausts... However, I'd be interested in trading skills with anyone around here.... I have a bridgeport and would be more than glad to trade labor... If anyone is interested in maybe getting an unofficial (no drama, no dues, no BS, I'll help you, you help me, no mandatory anything, saturday morning donut runs, Friday night cruises) club together i'd like to talk to them... Andy
I'm surpised Vance has'nt keyed in on this subject...He's in the Dayton area and I know he'would be into a little monthy get together...He's got his 34 5 window close to the road... you guy's might want to PM him and get him invloved...
Ahh Yes..... Looking for clubs??, Here? HA!! Milo And I hang together around here and since I work nights, I don't get out to cruise-ins much. Who wants to go anyway?? Always see the same **** with the same lawn chair bunch doing nothing. Cruise-in's on Wed @ Steak and Shake in Englewood. I was there last week and was outside about 30 minutes and went inside to eat. It get better as it gets warmer... S****s
Vance did chime in on the subject. I have been in contact with him via email. My old man lives in Centerville, OH, near Bellbrook and would be more than willing to travel a bit for good events, but I think it would be best to find some guys in his neck of the woods. As far as thinking Columbus is bad...... We've got The Road Devils CC and The Drifters CC.... I have also heard something about Outsiders CC.... but no confirmation. I'd say that at least two international hot rod clubs being in your town would be pretty good. Thanks for the responses guys. If anyone is looking for another guy to have around to talk cars with. My old man would jump at the chance. If you think you might be up for it, drop me a line with your info and I will forward it on to him to get in contact with you.
Check out this site, 46 pages of info all over Ohio (Watch out for the tuners!) http://www.ohiocarclubs.com/occ_MainPage.asp
Me too. I live on the East side of Cincinnati and Work North side. Dayton is only an hour away if I behave myself. I am new to this area and would help in organizing something. I'm originaly a Chicago boy and we had a couple of good clubs there in the 80's that worked the way Andy is describing. Was most EXCELLENT! Count me in. Glenn (513) 600-5520
Well its time for us in Dayton who are not lawn chair sitters to form a club to do things togather and have some fun. Jeff
I checked that out before I posted this. By page 25 of clubs I was tired of seeing the words "SicK" "illusionZ" "LOw" , etc. I also got tired of reading "sport compact and mini-truck".
Dayton used to have 2 very active clubs: Dayton Street Customs, and Street Rod ***ociates. They both put on a really good Sunday show, with a poker run and a jammin party with live bands and plenty of beer the Saturday night before the show. This was back in the day when the car clubs put on the shows: not the local 4H groups, or the church youth groups, or the local volunteer fire dept., etc Man I miss those shows....
I forgot about those, one was at the polish club and I think the other was at a place on dog leg road. Jeff
Dog Leg Road is a block from my house!! The good ole' days are gone and thats the way it is. Hard to get a bunch of people together today to do stuff because we all work different schedules. I usually run around with Pleasant and "Stretch" and run with them to events and swaps on the weekends.... S****s
well i wanna turn this town around, im puting together a club called ***falt ******yns, accepting apps. i have a shop/hq and an ally for burnouts. any takers? gotta get ready for the snow to melt.
I would be interested if its not a official club with all the b/s that usually accompanies them,I would like to find a group to do things with and help each other out but not be a official club with officers and all the other stuff.
Let me know when you get organized, I would like to see what you have going. I have kicked around the idea of reviving the old dayton car club known as the Road Knights. If you look at the old Kil-Kare dragstrip decals, they say "home of the road knights" on the bottom.
Andy, In respose to your question, "Do you know the rotation of Cruise the Burg / Springboro / Franklin and Germantown for the summer? Again, there are many lawn chairs, but it can still be kind of fun... parking a jalopy next to a gold chainer can provide some entertainment." Every year I go to the Sharonville Car Show (they block the streets downtown) on the last Sunday in April and pick up the new Show & Shine Calendar. It lists all the events for the year in Ohio and some big events in the neighboring states. There is literally something going on every night within 25 miles of my house (spring thru fall). Usually there is something really cool on the weekends within an hour. The Sharonville show is a great kick-off to the cruise season if it doesn't rain. If you can't make it to the show, just google "Show & Shine" and you should be able to order a calendar online.
There are cruisens every nite of the week in and around dayton OHIO. The biggest one is every friday nite rite off 675 on indian ripple road . Starts about 3 goes till about 10p. If you go to country cruisers.com you can see tons of pictures of local cruizes and also there is calander of events.
there used to be a lot of car clubs in the dayton/springfield area.what happened ,is the same thing that happens to most clubs that fail...the same people end up doing all the work, year after year.they eventually get tired of the abuse and quit, and eventually the club dies because the rest of the members are too lazy to get involved
I'm almost 70 and grew up in Dayton when EVERYONE cruised the Hasty-Tasty, Parkmores, Johnsons, Big-Boys, Hydes and on and on. Did you know that Car Craft Magazine once named Dayton as "Cruise-Capitol-East of the Mississippi"! All those Hot Cars paid for by wages from NCR, Frigidaire, Delco, Chrysler and the hundreds of machine shops that made parts for Detroit. Friday nights was Football/parking-cruising, Saturday was date night at the "finger-bowl" (Drive-in)then cruise or drag race, then Sunday it was Kilkare, Dayhio, Cleves to race or go watch "Ohio-George" fire up his Cammer and run. I pulled out THOUSANDS of old muscle cars from southern Ohio and northern KY over my years there. Have since moved to Florida and go back a few times a year and love seeing old friends like "The Egyptian",****s Crank, Holt Speed Shop and old friend and now famous Daryl Mayhabb(lives in CO.). Some of the HAMBERS hit it about clubs and all the work a few do. Thats also why I have gotten into Stock car replicas. They are fun to do and have Beach parades or driving them at tracks at over 60 meets a year and more being formed. I got tired of sitting in the hot sun in lawn chairs and seeing the same cars all the time (also why I have owned/sold/brokered over 4,000 in my life). Good luck Dayton. Bussing KILLED the town, I hope the love of the old cars lives on. Tom Kitchen
i dont know about dayton but over the last year at least 3 shows/cruise-ins that i actaully entered the hosting club asked on the registration slip asked if the person filling it out would be interested in joining the club and i said yes on all three they got my address i havnt heard from any of them so i guess they dont want new members
Hello Hambers, I grew up racing at Kil-Kare and have since moved to about five minutes from National Trails. Finding guys that want to hang out and wrench on their cars is becoming harder and harder. I have to get my dad to drive from Dayton any time I need an extra set of hands. The majority of guys I know that have cars, pay someone else to work on them... they are totally missing the point. The stories my dad tells of the days come and gone sounded like something sweet. I am one of those that bought my house for the garage. My grandpa used to belong to the Road Knights in Dayton. I would love to know if anyone does start that club up again. I recently found the old style Kil-Kare decals on Ebay that have "Home of the Road Knights" on them. Just in case anyone is feeling nostalgic. Unfortunately, the lawn chairs and parked cars are taking over the hobby. I was sad to see GoodGuys get rid of the racing at most of their events; it was what set their events apart. Good luck to all.
DRIFTERS DEFUNCT ROAD DEVILS I have heard disbanded and nothing about Outsiders-Do they even have cars?
Hey I am a old Road Knight there are quite a few of us still alive most of us own street rods we also put on the Old Gesser drag Race at Kil Kare this year it is Aug the 25 2012
