A Hurst Mount, a Chevy Engine and a Torque Tube walk into a bar....I mean car.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JeffreyJames, Dec 3, 2010.

  1. Reiterating what Chris and ***us have already said about the (4) 3/8 bolts holding the Hurst mount to the engine. You're going to want to use a bolt with the highest Proof Load, not Tensile Strength. I'm by no means a bolt expert, but after some quick internet research it looks like a 3/8th Grade 8 bolt have the highest Proof Load of any bolt at 120,000 p.s.i. Comparatively, a 3/8th Grade 5 bolt have a Proof Load of 85,000 p.s.i.

The Proof Load of a bolt is the axial tensile load which the product must withstand without evidence of any permanent set. (www.BoltDepot.com) i.e. the maximum compression load the bolt can withstand along it's longest axis before breaking or shearing.

Where as the Tensile Strength of a bolt is the maximum load in tension (pulling apart) which a material can withstand before breaking or fracturing. (www.BoltDepot.com)

    Haha, my exact thought!:D

Hey Jeff, think of those anti chatter rods as a leash for your engine/trans. One end mounts to the xmember and the other to you bellhousing and they keep the engine from moving fore and aft. This is a big issue with a Ford closed driveline because every time you accelerate the rear axle is moving the car forward by pushing the torque tube on the rear of the engine/trans! Unlike an open drive vehicle where springs/bars/arms are pushing on the frame...

I bought a worn out 283 with a HURST mount already bolted tp it ... for a 48 Ford project about 35 years ago. The lower right side front bolt was broken off flush. I tried everything my young rodder self knew to do and cound NOT get it out. I finally drilled it oversize and then tapped it to the next larger size. The other 3 bolts came out easily and were grade 8. I think the broken off bolt was grade 8 also cause it was very hard to drill.

I have a DZ 1969 Camaro " 302 " block here now with one of the front mount EAR PAD broke off. I believe the previous owner had used too long a bolt, bottomed out and over then tightened :( I got the engine out of a 40 Ford coupe ... getting a 350 and automatic.

And maybe that could have been the problem with that old 283 so many years ago.

Deuce Roadster had the exact same deal I do! The lower right is broken off flush with the block. Been putting off doing any thing about it while I do everything else to be done. (Some would say I'm putting off the whole truck! Stuff gets done between customer stuff, I promise!) Wonder if that is a coinky- dink or what?

Thanks guys, Jeremy and I got the engine out, new clutch shaft off the original trans, installed on the new one '39 trans, engine back in, clutch linkage hooked up and engine bolted back in. We started reviewing ideas for the chatter rods and where they can be placed as the original location are still a bit fuzzy. Pretty good day and we're back in action!

Vic I should stop by very soon to check those out. I'm interested in the HEIM joint setup you have going on.

    Thanks man it feels good!

Thank you so much "J" for helping me today. I had a rad time as usual and I learned a ton again as usual! I think as long as I stay focused and start running down a check list I can have it done is a timely fashion.

First thing on that list? Axle Keys.

I have ran two early fords with sbc in over the years with the Hurst mount and never had clearance problems . But you must run the short water pump, 283 style.

Honest Charley Speed Shop used to sell " SPECIAL " axle keys back in the day. Vic's 40 has them I believe ... cause I spun the tires in it quite a few times ... without failure

    Good thread with great info.

So who's the **** who rated it 1 star? Really?

I can't stand the rating system! Stupid. If you agree please go to the questions and suggestions section and support my rant.

Sorry JJ. I know that this post is really important to you and to all of us. We want this on the road like now! I'm glad you and Jerm refrained from the snow angels yesterday and got **** accomplished. I sure didn't.

    Keep plugging man.

The only bolts that I'm chroming are the fuel pump block off. The rest are staying....even though I think quite a few should be done.

Thanks guys, I'm going to look into those special keys and see what those are about. I'm pretty stoked to outside and look at the car knowing that it's getting closer. Engine looks so damn good it's not funny and the fact that the clutch is hooked up make me happy.

I don't think I've ever rated a thread in my life. If it makes any consolation I'm deeply honored I even got one star haha!!!

  20. Ya, but one star is terrible and this thread has oodles of good info!

Haha! I just voted and now it's up to 4!

Funny thig is EVERY thread I do usually gets a one star rating...even some of my for sale threads! Sounds like I have someone out there that don't like me :D

Rating system: I really don't see the point

  25. Says the guy with the one star threads! Ha! Just kidding Chris.

I have a question about the axle keys. Are they hardened or can you use square stock of the same size and make your own? I have always wondered.

I was wondering that too Ron. Perhaps Jeremy has some of that space age steel he could make me some so I can do that one weak burnout before breaking something else haha!!!

Seriously with all the stories you hear about shearing axles keys, that would be awesome if there were replacements that were 2x, 4x, 10x stronger then the originals.
