I know no one missed me while I was gone, any way I have gotten a new project and back on building. And yes I have been reading up on the site to see all the cool builds going on. I do have a question. My 46 Ford car has the flattie 8 and I am sure it is a 6v system. The p.o had a 12v bat in it and a switch to be pulled to power coil (ignition on and everything still run through the voltage regulator and 6v gen) and a push ****on to start. While looking at it he started it and starter stuck for a few sec. He thought the push ****on was bad. Well today I finally tried to start it to move it. As soon as I pushed the ****on it started right up, but the starter would not disingage. Could it just be starter needs rebuild or should I take it apart and clean it? Or could it be something wrong with the regulator? That brings me to next question. Should I disconect the regulator and gen since they are 6v and I am using a 12v batt? If I leave it conected like p.o has it, will it burn up reg and gen? I am only going to be moving it around the house till I go with GM one wire alt. Would it be better to run a hot wire to solenoid then other side to batt.(conect as usale) take wire from hot side of solenoid to pull switch then out of pull switch to resistor before coil. When pulled will power coil like ignition switch. Then wire push ****on with hot wire and a wire out to s post on solenoid. Will this work to bip*** the regulator and gen for now? <!-- / message --><!-- controls -->
if your just moving it around it doesent need the regulator or gen hooked up to run, sounds like the starter drive is sticking and best thing to do is pull starter and have it rebuilt the old 6v starters will last quite a while with 12v going to it in rare cases you could have a problem with the flywheel not letting the starter disengage but once you pull starter and have it rebuilt the rebuilder will be able to tell you if is sticking average price for a good starter rebuild here in washington is about 75 bucks hope that helps the regultaor and gen are part of the charging system and have nothing to do with the starting system unless somone hacked your wiring up.
Thank you 59. I was thinking that having the reg and gen hooked up really was not doing anything so I guess I will pull the starter and rewire the car to bip*** the reg and gen. At lest till I try and get the one wire alt to fit into the gen body(just for looks).
Man I am with stupid and I am the only on here. I think I should check the solenoid before I take the starter off. Should I take the power wire off starter and put a test light on the end, then push the ****on and see if it stays lit after the ****on is released? If not which would be the best way to test it? Or can I go by resitance?(what should it be)
