Yep, had a set like this, even if your not worried about blowing stuff on your car, I always felt bad when I pulled into an event and blew crap all over everyone elses ride.
Not only do they look great, you did it yourself. That's what it's all about! Weld 'em up and do the other side!
I don't mind them at all.Kind of like them, but they sure will kick up the dust. So,you're not planning to muffle it at all?
YOU made them! I think they are spot on! YOU made them! Who cares what somebody else thinks? YOU made 'em!
Yeah, not really working for me. Individual pipes do not work well on a street motor, so it isn't a case of function over form. IF you brought them into a collector and then ran a bit of pipe, they would work better. It would help if the first pipe went inside the second so it were shorter and the second came up a bit to make it longer, closer to equal length. Now the bigger issue is they really do look way to 60's-70's for the style of your car, just out of place. I think you'll come up with a better style. Now this isn't aimed at him, cuz I think he already knows this. The fact that someone builds something themselves should not be an only reason to run it on their car. If a guy has the talent to do this, then he has the talent to try again till it really suits the car. Don't settle just because it was your first attempt.
Well said. Not only did I build the headers, but I also built the whole damn car. I thought about them over dinner, and think i'm going to redesign them like in Spoggies drawing. I'm not going to settle for these. there has been many changes throughout the build of the car, the headers just being one of them. It was just an idea I came up with, and a good way to kill a Saturday afternoon.
I'd make a couple more attempts. They don't suck, but they do not fit that build. To square looking I think... not sure.
No, it's whatever you want it to be. It looks like a great effort to keep the tubes neat and to the point, if that's the way it sounds best and you like the look, leaverrite there. My personal taste is to keep the exhaust tucked in as much as possable and not hanging way out there. I would consider bringing them together close in. I used a 2" center pipe, (yes the bolt heads are close to the pipe but it works) and I didn't bother with the equal leingth thing. Whatever it took to go around the steering and meet he center pipe at some kind of angle. Since my pedals, gas tank, & battery are under there, the exhaust had to be outside. I believe the 2" main tube gives it a lot bigger voice than your same size 1 1/2" would If you have time, tubing and flanges for the other side, take off what you have. Tack up a center pipe and runners to it, mock-up and study on it. Wish I had a close-up of mine, only pic I could find, but if interested I could get a close-up when I go out to plow snow.
The headers you made look like fenderwell headers ... the bends are too abrupt for an open fender car ... would be perfect on a 55 Chevy gasser.
Well I built some new ones this morning. I used the flex pipe like I originally wanted to do, and using Spoggies sketch as a guide I came up with these. I like these much better. Their still not done, need to be final welded and trimmed up, and I need to build a bracket to hold them up, but it gives you an idea. I think it has a very duesenburg look to it, which I like, especially when it has a full hood side with the flex pipe coming out.
Yep... definitely more of an early feel. The other headers are/were cool, but this mock up is more suitable for the car/era. Run with it!
YES........much better! Don't be afraid to be different, this game was built on being a different. HAVE FUN.
hell i have seen cars built around a single part before, now you have a reason to build a real hot chevy 265,283,301. 60's era coupe would look perfect with these. I have seen your work and your shops work BUILD A CAR AROUND THEM.
It's already on the back burner. I've got a 26 T coupe body, a 32 chassis, 283 chevy, 57 ford 9" and a pair of cheater slicks. Once the roadster is done, I'm starting on the T, full 60's style competition drag style. Infact, i'm so exited about building the T, i think it may be why my first set of headers for the roadster came out the way they did
I bought it at a local industrial supply place called Greggs Distributors. http://www.greggdistributors.ca/home.htm Comes in many different sizes as big as 6" i think. Apparently it's being around since the 20's as hasn't changed at all. I got the idea from looking through the Don Montgomery book called "Hotrods in the Forties".
Looks great. Yeah, we sell flex pipe at my work, you should be able to get it at any good auto parts store
well one side is done, trimmed and welded up. Just have to build a bracket to hold them up at the back, but I ran out of flat bar, and nothing is open on Sunday evening.
