thanks for the good words, I think I have pics of it or one just like it from lawton in the 70's it was the blue mule then raced at faxon okla ... ill post as soon as i get them also got the certification from hilborn that the injection unit was purchased in phoenix by gibsons garage ? on 12/12/60 for a 283
Wicked car. Looks great as is. Can't wait to see it freshened up. A buddy used to have an Opel GT when I was in school and we used to ride 4 of us in it to go to town (two in the hatch). Nice find!
well we have torn it down and have re hung the front end with new bolts mis alignment spacers and bolts n washers etc. needs new 4 bar so ill build a new set for it ... need to do new brakes incl m/c. so far I have a new eagle steel crank, forged 12/1 pistons steel eagle i beam rods and 4 bolt block... fuelie mondello heads and a comp roller set up for it with the all rebuilt hilborn set up glide and converter .. gonna start building new bars to make it legal on the cage in a week or so. finnally got it down to where we can tell what it is all about. not bad for this old of a race car and i think it was in fact a pro comp in the 70's. here are a few new pics of it .
found out it is a 70s pro comp car and it is in fact 100 inch here is a pic of it in 76 at ardmore with an injected big block in that cl***...
Do you know when it was originally built? Back in the very early '70s, Lamar Walden in Atlanta was given one of the very first Vega bodies by Chevy; he made a fibergl*** mold of it, and built a flip-top g***er. It had the same style ch***is you've got, even had the Corvair steering box, coil front suspension and spindle-mounts. The ch***is looked exactly like yours, and he ran an injected motor (don't remember if it was big block or small block) The gas cl*** died shortly after, and a lot of g***ers became comp cars. -Brad
Looking good Sam. There was an Econo F/C circuit on the west coast that ran cars like this as well. This Pinto was at Denton a few years ago and that's where it came from.
Looks like the car that Lewis Josephy (sp) from Grandfield ran back in the mid to late 70's. I think he still runs a auto shop there. His was the only flip top, square tube framed, Opel GT I saw. He raced it at Lawton (LA Dragway) and maybe Frederick (Cherokee Raceway). Larry T
that has got to be it as it came from lawton track as far back as i can find it. i think it ws called the blue mule ??? any ideas ? if that was him, sure would like to find some pics from then of it.
After rereading the thread, I'm not sure if it's his old car or not. But I don't think there could be two cars like it in the area. It had a carbureted smallblock in it when he had it. I'll see if I can find contact info for him. Larry T
what did the pinto run with the injected ford in it? trying to figure this deal out . nice to hear about the pro comp cars from the day...thanks
Cool. Took that picture in '05. Guy told me it came out of California. Did you own it before or after this? Just curious.
Sam that is correct on the opel, if it is the car I sent you a photo on the owner was Lewis Josphy. We should contact Farmer Geogre Simons I bet he can run the guy down for you.
I know some folks in Frederick that will probably know if Lewis is still around. I'll talk to them sometime this week. I can tell you that Lewis replaced the car with a NICE red (don't know whay I always think black) 23T Altered that Dean Woods and Freddy Garfield in Wichita Falls built for him. I don't know if Dean is still around or not, but he might have info too. Larry T
Hey Sam, Could I borrow that body for a little while I wouldnt pull a mold off of it or maybe stretch it a little, really I wouldnt How do you find all this cool stuff? Scott Leber www.ScottRodscustom.com
if you refinish it for me you can scott............ it is in pretty good shape but would be nice for a gl*** guy to do that for me... i just need it back to race by april
Thanks for posting that pic, I didn't have any of the paper/pic trail when I had it. Rick Blood built it in Monrovia (real nice guy), he sold it to a cat in the Dallas area, a guy I know up here who buys/sells got it and sold it to me, I sold it to a guy in Kan.,I think. I was looking through the sold listing from Me*** (Indy?) and there it was! I would have tried to buy it back, had I known it was for sale, it brought half of what I sold it for! Miss that car. I have no idea what it ran, it was a roller when I had it. Rick told me the inj. was a one-off piece, very cool. The guy in Texas kept it. OK, enough thread-theft! (Make that mold!!!)
now that is is all apart I am working on the ch***is for saftey updates. new bars under the seat area today where it was jus wide open?? and built all 4 new bars for the rear 4 link, it had all solid ends now has new heim ends like it should and I will have to rebuild the attachment points in double shear instead of a single plate mt. but it is going quite well, here it is on the rotisserie ..
