dig the old phones, record players, and even BLACK AND WHITE t.v.s in some of those late 50's/early 60's customs.

wonder how bad the record players skipped, especially on a custom with cut or heated springs!

It probably was a RCA 45 record player. They were all chrome and mounted under the dash. They held 14 45's and you pushed up a stack of 45's on the spindle and they were automatically rejected after the record played. The record just dropped down on the bottom of the record player. The "turntable" was suspended on springs on the inside top of the record player. So the turntable sort of floated. The tone arm was pressed up against the 45 by its spring. They would both move in unison if the car bounced.
I had one installed in my severely lowered '55 F-100 back in 1961 and I never really had any skipping problems. Yeah ... I occasionally hit a bad pot hole or bump I was not aware of and the record would skip.
Later on, a company called ARC bought out he rights for this player and they sold a bunch before the 8-tack hit the scene.
I have one safely stashed away in my garage as we speak.
