  5. JJ, whats going on my friend? Hows the car/build?

I'll have some pics up soon of my build, still collecting bits for it.
A lil side note, how low have some of you gone with the stock diff/trans in these cars, like anyone gone really really low? Lets here how you did it and how its worked out.

The '35 is going slowly but surely. I have been pecking away at a few things while waiting to get some of the necessities in like Kingpin rebuild kit and front spring etc. I might have this car back on the ground and lowered this week or next week at the latest I think.

I have been having issues with the 350 as you can see from the other thread but I might have a line on a 265 close by so I might look into that. Did not budget for a rebuild and I am sure that's not going very cheap but it might get me a couple steps closer.

Sacramento Vintage Ford has been back ordering all my my stuff for weeks now which is sort of frustrating. Once I get the rubber mat I can start buttoning up the interior with the heat insulation I got from Lobuc and the new coupe seat I got. I might even have new door panels made and a headliner put in too!!

I'll keep you guys updated once I make some real progress but in the meantime I can't wait to see more of everybody's projects.

Jeffery, KEEP THRASHING at it and you'll get there soon enough! It ain't good when you have to wait for things that are outta your control, but when you're motivating down that road these things will pale into insignificance!

Progress is coming, well how do I say this? Slow? Hahaha!! I have had a couple things that have slowed me down including a bathroom remodel, family visiting, and a shop being pulled out from us which led to me having to cram everything in my garage.

I did pick up a blast cabinet and a paint gun and should be ready to paint my suspension this weekend so I can get it back under the car.

Jordan Graham (5wbomber) dropped my axle and it's nothing short of amazing looking. If it were not for the heat dust on the axle I would have swore that the axle was cast with a 4" drop. symmetrical and even on both sides from top to bottom.

I suggest that if any of you guys need an axle dropped he the guy to do it. I sent him my axle and it was as crooked as a politician. Now it's straight and dropped right so I am excited to get this thing in to say the least.

I am possibly going to pickup a 265 Chevy engine this weekend so I can get the 350 out of there and have myself a proper engine that I'll be proud of. It's about 3 hours away but it has been stored for 30 years so I'm expecting it to be in pretty good condition. I'll more then likely have to rebuild it but I may attempt that myself with the help of a friend that is knowledgeable in that area. I know I am going to have to pay a machinist for some work like that rear Can journal notch and perhaps a punch out to 283. I would like the engine to be warmed over with a cam and such.

I am waiting on the Floor mat from Sactown Vintage Ford so that I can get back to the interior after I POR-15'd the entire floor. I also have the steering wheel issue pretty much resolved and I should have that welded to the adapter soon so I can check that off.

I am not really sure about the wiring but I think a rebel harness might be my best bet. There was an article in the newest Rod & Custom concerning a cloth wrapped set but I am sure they are pricey.

Wheels and tires are mounted and look fucking awesome!!! Can't wait to get them on ans see them for the first time. I will need to have all my drum turned I think before I can get that far.

Anyways, I am shooting for Christmas as my driving date. Couple that with me trying to get a '31 Chevy rolling at least so I can give it to my father in law as a 60th Birthday gift and I will more then likely miss the deadline again. I try my best though.

Once I get more progress pics I'll throw them up on a part two thread!!!!

Thanks man!!! Look out for Update 2 pretty soon. I am getting a 265 rebuilt for the car and half of the suspension is painted. Should be able to make some more progress this week.

I really do appreciate all the kind words.

Ok I have been really slacking as far as updates go on this car. Not even in your eyes but my own. A lot of changes have been made and progress is there even though it's not nearly as much as I'd like.

I will have Part 2 of the Idiot's Guide to Building a Hot Rod in the next few weeks. That part will include....

    >>>New Stance thanks to drop axle, reversed eyes, mono leaf etc.
    >>>New 1939 rear equipped with Original Mercury 3.54 Ring & Pinion
    >>>Patched firewall with engine bay cleaned up and hopefully painted.
    >>>1956 265 Chevy motor with .125" over 097 Duntov Cam Weiand 4 pot intake etc
    >>>Wheels & Tires mounted
    >>>Dash with new gauges started
    >>>39 Ford tranny replacing the 35 unit
    >>>Interior Started

And a bunch of other small things. Progress has been slow....really slow but I have learned a lot on the way. Hopefully I'll get the car finished by mid July when I'm expecting my first born to arrive. If you're interested check out part one and be ready for and update very soon. Thanks for looking!

Yeah I know. And even worse is that I'm having issues with my '52 and I don't think theres enough time to work the bug out comfortably and take a 8-10 hour drive. So expect me in a '07 Silverado as of right now. Bummer!!!!!

I'm really hoping to have the car done sooner but that's a safe bet I think. I am going to hit the baby's room really hard this weekend and hopefully after that I'll have a bunch of free weekends to get back on the '35.

  21. Be carefull with the shackles on the rear. It they are much longer than stock you can get excessive sway. You might consider while the spring is getting the eyes reversed having it de-arched and shortened a little. This will tighten-up the handling and lower the rear and improve the handling.

The shackles are only 1" longer I believe, They're from Vern Tardel. As far as de arching the spring I could definitely do that since I am the one that reversed the eyes. I'm all done with that part and when I reassemble I plan on taking a few leaves out to see where I'm at. I don't need too much lowering out back just as long as the front is pointing down:D:D.

So I've heard. The Merc just needs a little more TLC as far as seat belts and getting the motor to run less rich with the aid of a carb rebuild and fuel pressure regulator. Oh and I might need a sleeve on the throw out bearing from when we swapped in the t-5 so let's say a weekends worth of work. Before I had this little fuel issue the car ran awesome!!!

As far as getting the '35 done, yeah I would definitely like to have it on the road before he comes because I know I am going to be busy for oh the next 18 years hahahaha!!!! I'm hurrying!!!!!

  23. Dust this thread off and move on that car JJ!

Why don't you just flatten the x-member out back?

Best advice I can give about having kids... make the kids suit your life, not you suiting the kids life. Take em everywhere, do everything with them. They'll fit in just fine!;)

No I did two different other threads. Part 2 and part 2.5, which are fairly recent. Part 3 should be up soon once I get a bit further.
