'31 Model A Coupe Value?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 63CadGuy, Feb 24, 2005.

  1. A guy in my old neighborhood has a '31 Model A coupe that he's had in his garage for at least 25 years. It is rust free and complete, not sure if it running or not. So I ask my mom next time she see's him to ask him if he wants to sell it. She talked to him last night and he says "maybe, not sure, one of his kids could be interested someday, maybe, I paided $400 for it when I bought it, I suppose it could be worth $1000, I don't know". Now I know it's worth more then a $1000, but how much? I'm going to try a stop by to see just how interested he might be and if he thinks it worth $1000, maybe a little higher offer might get him to say sure. But my question is, how much is a '31 Model A coupe, complete rust free car, probably not running, car worth?

you're killing us here with this "barn find" story....actually, 31's had bad muffler bearings, so, I'd say he's pricing it right. what's his phone number?? :D

I always upgrade mine to roller bearings those old pour in babbet bearings wear out too fast. I would do this as soon as you get it.

  4. it's hard to put an exact price on something without seeing it in person or some good pictures , but if it is what you said., it's worth well over the $1000

get over right now and buy it , do not waste anytime thinking about it...or p*** it on to another Minnesota guy...like me

    worth?

if he says it's worth a thousand bucks don't argue with him, just give him the money.

I bought my 31 six years ago, no rust ever no patch pannels, motor was out and apart tires held air, last registered in 1961. I paid a wopping $3500. Sold the stock stuff to a restorer for $2200, I was happy to get it for that, So if you want to make a quick grand let me know.

  7. I know it's worth alot more then the $1000 he was talking about and I don't yet know if he will part with it, but when I heard that he said he thought it must be worth a $1000 now my heart started racing and now I want to pursue this further and I'm looking for a little ammo to use on the wife to justify a 4th car when she kind of flipped ofter I bought the 3rd car. She's kind of one of these "I'm not sure why you need one, let alone 3" kind of wifes, but let's me go and buy the stuff because she know how much I'm into it. So, I do know that if it has bad muffler bearing I should p*** on it as they are not being reproduced and buying them on ebay is completly out of the question, but let's just say that the muffler bearings are good, and the car is rust free, not running and looks like it's been sitting in a garage for 25 or 30 years and you needed to say to the wife, "this thing is worth $****, how can I p*** this up" to get her on board, what would that ballpark value be?

1930 coupe complete, not running, beat up some without much rust sitting in shed for 30 years. Worth $4500 to $5500. Just my opinion. Neal

I paid $6900 for a complete, all-original, running 1930 Model A coupe. It needs a new top insert and seat cover, but there's no body rust and the doors open and close smoother than a new car. Has the original motor too (matches the number on the ***le). The restorer guys sure are going to be pretty unhappy when I start cutting it up.

When someone has had a car a long time and then sells it unexpectantly it takes a little while for all their friends, family and ***ociates to find out the old car went bye bye. Thats when the seller starts to find out if he got fair money, good money, great money or not enough money.

You are asking for numbers so.......I think $2500 would be a fair number for both of you. Steve

I recently paid $4,900 for my 31 A deluxe coupe, it was complete, ran & semi drove, it had been converted to 40 juice brakes with a 39 steering box set up for cross steering, body was rust/dent free but the interior was missing & all the rubber components on the car needed replacing including all the brakes, it took me 6 months of looking & I think $4,900 was cheap, do a search for orcas tow, there are a few posts w/pic's, grab that thing before he changes his mind!

    I bought a very nice running-driving '31 A coupe for $900, course that was in 1972.

Didn't do anything to it except drive it some and keep it all waxed up, sold it in 1992 for $8200.

  15. Thanks all for the info, that was what I was looking for. I think I'll stop by this weekend and see what he has to say. Thanks again.

I agree with J'st Wandering. And I'll bet you could get the engine running if it still turns freely. Good luck! Keith

Ask Jessie James, I bet he would pay 20K for a coupe (and only keep the body)...

BenD's wife missy said it best to me... i was complaining that my wife just doens't get the car stuff...and how lucky Ben was to have a wife that was into it...missy said your wife just see's rusty parts...it's not a car to her. I thought about that and realized she had shared an amazing insight with me. And ever since i could get into my wife's head and address her concerns it has been alot easier buying and playing with my car ****.

and i agree - decent shape...a few dings here or there and a few bad rust spots that are patchable...your looking at $4-5K

  24. Not exactly, that would be what it is worth to me, my question was what is it worth. More exactly, what have you seen them sell for, or what is a car like this worth to the general public, there, a bit more to the point. And again, thanks to all that gave a more realistic response.

I bought a 31 A in restored condition no patches at all off the road 20 plus years for $6500. in 92. Saved a lot of labor and grief! Today I would expect around the same price. They haven't gone up as fast in this area and the going rate would be about $8000 for the same coupe.

  28. ***us and StevieD, I'll be taking the waterways to keep you off my trail! But I will be drivin' back into the hood this weekend to try and get him to part with my future hot rod. I'll keep ya posted.

I just happen to have gone to anestate auction last Sat. that featured some model A bodies and frames. A completelt rusted out 31 coupe with the bottom 6 inches rotted away, sub frame rusted away, wood rotted out, many dents and heavy rusting on the rest of the body, gas tank rusted out, deck lid ruined. no gl***- a typical field car- brought 700 DOLLARS !! A 30 two door sedan in similar shape with no doors brought 600 DOLLARS !! and a 31 four door in similar shape brough 450 DOLLARS !! A Bare 30-31 frame with only the side rails and front and rear crossmembers and pretty rusty brought 220 DOLLARS. I guess the price of field cars is on the rise... Dale
