Looks like fun. The right paint job and it'll be a show stopper.

Wicked car. Looks great as is. Can't wait to see it freshened up.

A buddy used to have an Opel GT when I was in school and we used to ride 4 of us in it to go to town (two in the hatch).

    Nice find!

well we have torn it down and have re hung the front end with new bolts mis alignment spacers and bolts n washers etc. needs new 4 bar so ill build a new set for it ... need to do new brakes incl m/c. so far I have a new eagle steel crank, forged 12/1 pistons steel eagle i beam rods and 4 bolt block... fuelie mondello heads and a comp roller set up for it with the all rebuilt hilborn set up glide and converter .. gonna start building new bars to make it legal on the cage in a week or so. finnally got it down to where we can tell what it is all about. not bad for this old of a race car and i think it was in fact a pro comp in the 70's. here are a few new pics of it .

Do you know when it was originally built?
Back in the very early '70s, Lamar Walden in Atlanta was given one of the very first Vega bodies by Chevy; he made a fiberglass mold of it, and built a flip-top gasser.
It had the same style chassis you've got, even had the Corvair steering box, coil front suspension and spindle-mounts. The chassis looked exactly like yours, and he ran an injected motor (don't remember if it was big block or small block)

The gas class died shortly after, and a lot of gassers became comp cars.

    Looking good Sam.

There was an Econo F/C circuit on the west coast that ran cars like this as well.
This Pinto was at Denton a few years ago and that's where it came from.

Looks like the car that Lewis Josephy (sp) from Grandfield ran back in the mid to late 70's. I think he still runs a auto shop there. His was the only flip top, square tube framed, Opel GT I saw. He raced it at Lawton (LA Dragway) and maybe Frederick (Cherokee Raceway).

After rereading the thread, I'm not sure if it's his old car or not. But I don't think there could be two cars like it in the area. It had a carbureted smallblock in it when he had it. I'll see if I can find contact info for him.

I know some folks in Frederick that will probably know if Lewis is still around. I'll talk to them sometime this week.
I can tell you that Lewis replaced the car with a NICE red (don't know whay I always think black) 23T Altered that Dean Woods and Freddy Garfield in Wichita Falls built for him. I don't know if Dean is still around or not, but he might have info too.

Thanks for posting that pic, I didn't have any of the paper/pic trail when I had it. Rick Blood built it in Monrovia (real nice guy), he sold it to a cat in the Dallas area, a guy I know up here who buys/sells got it and sold it to me, I sold it to a guy in Kan.,I think. I was looking through the sold listing from Mecum (Indy?) and there it was! I would have tried to buy it back, had I known it was for sale, it brought half of what I sold it for! Miss that car.
I have no idea what it ran, it was a roller when I had it. Rick told me the inj. was a one-off piece, very cool. The guy in Texas kept it.
OK, enough thread-theft! (Make that mold!!!)
