Anybody have some pictures of 55-7 chevy gassers with stock frame horns and a 1941-1st series 55 chevy pickup I-beam front axle?
I have a '57 with a '57 pickup front axle, not what you asked for, but close!! Can send pics if you want.
im same as above . I went with the 57 truck axle because the leaves are perfectly parralell and almost match up perfectly with the stock frame . The earlier truck axles have tapered leaves that come closer towards the front . To me it just looked like they would sit to far inboard on the stock frame to be safe. i can get some closer pics if you like
id like to see some pictures. I still ogtta get my steering lined out "ie ,,, a correct steering arm" as you can tell fromt he pics my drag link is at a big angle , no motor right now and just hooked that up to roll around on , ive got a 6 inch bendable from borgeson mullins but it wont drop far enough off the stock box so i gotta do something else.
kiwi kev did a real nice tech piece on a 55 gasser front end, you will have to search his user name, and then look at the threads he started to find it. shakeypuddin55 did a thread also.
My 55 project is supposed to arrive later today. I will share pictures and progress with y'all. Thanks for all of the input fellow HAMBers!!!
From an earlier 55 chevy gasser thread... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=828993&d=1259547486
I've installed 3 straight axles in 55-57 Chevy's I owned and always used a '55-'59 Chevy truck axle. They're almost a bolt in with the spring width matching the tri-5 Chevy rails so well!
I used 57 truck axle on my 57 and made a steering arm. Used the original p/s pitman arm and ordered a center link from speedway at 39". the steering arm I made mounts on the pass. side top.
55 with an early Chev homemade straight axle. Drum brakes, single master cylinder. We made the front end for a film in like 2 days. After we were done a friend asked if he could follow me in it to Los Angeles from Seattle.
I didn’t build it. They look like the original truck springs. It was built in the 1960s. So I would say Original. Since there were not a lot of options then
