Yep the cam will turn the normal direction with the engine running backawards, George at Clay Smith took care of the grind and it should be here tomorrow:D I'm going with a firing sequence of the Drive engine firing first and then 10 degrees later the "Slave" engine will fire, I'm not an engineer but I like the idea. I think it will lighten the load on the ring gear and act as a longer duration power stroke as was described to me.

How are you timing the engines to each other?I mean flywheel wise. Lippy

If I understand your question correctly here's my answer:D Say each engine has it's dist locked out and the timing is static set on ea at 30 Degrees BTDC on #1 cyl to fire, both engines are mounted to the engine plate with only the slave engine having a flywheel. Now I turn the drive engine to 20* (10* after it fired) and I install the flywheel on the drive engine. The flywheels may not perfectly line up but a degree or 2 one way or the other probably won't matter.
No pics but today was a great day with some friends coming thru with the items I need to fire this thing Sunday. Thanks Tim, without your help it would have been a bunch more difficult to achieve my goal;)

Good to know you guys in Cali have a place to race cars like this. We do too here in MO and IL. But nothing like Eagle Field. That is what I need is a big open area like that. You know something that is wider than 35 feet wall to wall like the local 1/8th mile tracks I have to play on. The ghost likes to hunt walls.

i love this thread. twin engines kick ass. PLEASE tell me you are going to run dual rear wheels. for some reason when i visualize 4 pie-crust slicks going up in smoke, in harmony. i get goose bumps

Rocky I have some 2" flanged 97 pattern carb risers made out of steel tubing maybe you can angle cut and modify for the carbs. If you can use them you can have them, there is six of them.

  20. Wholly shit!

Is that how you get one engine to run backerd?

    Timing gears?

Chase, I'm not disputing your findings in any way, so please don't take it that way, I'm just stating what we found. I really find it quite interesting. Now my crustry ol' mind is wondering WHY?

The inline twin that I drove, we also experimented alot with different firing sequences, but we found that the car ran best firing the motors 45 degrees apart. The car was also easier to start at 45 degrees apart. We found generally we could pickup as much as 3-4 mph and 7-8 hundreths with the 45 degrees apart deal. Now that being said this car was very unpredictable as far as getting it to hook up even though we were using one of the early style pedal type slipper clutches. We were also limited on tire size as the largest tire at the time was a 12:00-16. This car was the best driving dragster that I ever drove, it was just like driving a Cadillac on a Sunday drive, even when the car still had the tires struck in the lights at 235 mph.

I will be visiting with one of the most knowledgeable twin engine dragster guys out of the D/FW area this weekend at the Ol' drag racers Christmas reunion and I will do a little brain picking. They ran several inlines and side by sides back in the late 50's and early 60's out of Ft. Worth

I know it was mentioned in an earlier post about vibration and I remember him telling a story about one of the sise by side twins they ran and it literally walking itself sideways in the pits at Tulsa just sitting there idleing. If I remember correctly he said it was caused by experimentation with firing sequences.

The fun part of running a twin is the fans are totally fascinated by them.

    Merry Christmas to all.

King, If ya ever make the trip out west be sure to let us know and The guys and I will treat you like Royalty:D

Carl is working on the Log to set the carbs up straight, whatya think Carl?

    HaHaHa, Quit it Sam:D

Since I have to have axles made I can make them any pattern;). OK I installed the cam and drive (that little tube of Moly is JJJJJUst enough:D & it took me for ever to find and fit the damn Half Moon Key) and everything seems to be right although I need to double check the firing order as I tired and was getting hipnotized watching the damn lifters go up & down. Anyway the intake and exhaust valve timing seem right and I'll get some rest and check it again tomorrow! Here's the sacrificial 307 with the cam installed.

Carl, I'll get together with Skip on the Risers and be in touch.
Well we have a winner, with a little rest I checked the firing order and came up with 12756348. I'm going out tonight to see where the cam is set and start on the heads Tim did for me, man he did a nice 3 angle job, Thanks Again Tim! Photo's at 11:D

Put a mirror to it and it's just reversed. So wouldn't it make sense to start on 2 instead of 1 or is it a non issue as long as the sequence is right?

Sorry, now that I thought about it, the timing marks probably dictate that you start on 1.
