Living in southeastern Oklahoma there is absolutely nobody that knows much about dragsters, We have most everything figured out except for the wheels, would like to use a traditional wire wheel for the front but cannot find a source for such. We are planning to build a nostalgic style FED and could use some help. Not really looking for store bought, would like to use what they did in the early 60's

Call Jon Hansen at Hayden Wheels...(805)444-4489.

  5. Rock, Search out a poster by the name of Dolmetsch (I hope I have the spelling correct), he is building a FED and is using spoked motorcycle wheels.

He would be the guy to talk to if you want to do this cheap. He is a great talker (actually I mean poster) and would have no issues walking you through what he did.

Look up "New FED project" on this site ... I did get the spelling correct, it is Dolmetsch.

    Good luck

If you are really in to do it yourself I have a pair of undrilled hubs and a pair of alloy rims that i purchased some time back from Sandy Kosman. My next drag strip project will probably be a vintage style funny car so the wheel components are surplus to my needs at the moment. You can have them for whatever I have in them--will need to check what I paid.

  9. I put Motorcycle wheels on my new rail and have been working at adapting a set to my senior dragster as well. Lots of pics on my thread. New FED Project. Minimum specs are in the rule books. Mine are well above minimums spoke size etc. It wasnt a big job but it requires some determination.

What spindles you going to run??? If you want lace wheels, you'll find more for Anglia Spindles then Ford Spindles. Try Racing Junk and Ebay. I bought mine off ebay

Back in the sixties we got 17" Honda Cub rims from the local dealer and made our own hubs--got one of the many motorcycle shops in town to lace them up.
Dolmetsch is using motorcycle wheels with the original hubs but if you run Anglia style spindles you need a hub with big and little bearings. He is pretty crafty and makes his own spindles to suit the wheels.

  14. I also bult an adapter to mount the same wheels on Chev Handivan splindles. The adapter goes in where the brake shoes would normally be and the wheel with some minor machine work can use the standard Chev Handivan bearings. I use Rear dirt bike wheels because they are strong , have thicker spokes then the front and are priced right. They are also 17 inch as are most front runners for rails. It is doable but like I said it requires determnation. It is not a five minute job. The one problem i see is the spindle in automotve axles is not as long as a motorcycle wheel is deep so you have to bore it up in a ways. You have to rebore the outer smaller hole for the outer bearing anyway but it has to be inside a fair amount. Like i said it is doable but you gotta really want it. Jeff21 uses Motorcycle wheels too. In fact he helped me sort out a bit of this. He uses the cast spoke variety. I pay $20 for a useable wheel. I have had to junk one but am wiser now and fussier when buying. Actually i use my junk one for all this experimenting.
