I bought a 1946 ford flathead last week. It has a fram filter on the head, like this ebay auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...ry=33661&item=7956164932&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW I am wondering if they came stock or were they aftermarket? Are they any good? Also how can I tell 42-48 intake apart from 48+ or 32-41? My brothers father in law has a three carb manifold sitting in his garage. He doesnt know what it fits. I suppose I could just try it. I am a flatty virgin, so help me out please. Thanks Jason
The filters typically only take care of around 20% of the oil going through the system in a flathead. Of course its better than nothing at all. Sooner or later at 20% filtering all the oil goes through it in time. I believe these filters could be bought aftermarket at the time and the dealers installed them. The ones I've seen were all Fram filtering systems. Two different mouints were made for these. The earlier mount directly to the headbolts. The later mounted on an extra boss area on the heads of only the 49-53 models. All the intakes are interchangable and can be used as such. The only difference is the later 49-53 models the had a few holes less. Four I think. The hole pattern is still the same on these and can still be used interchangably. If thats a word.
Thats what I needed to know. I was reading about the flathead filtering in the tech-o-matic. I was not sure which filter mine was. I will probly convert to full filtering. Im going to have to beg him for the manifold too. Thanks
Petejoe, you are truly an expert on the flathead! I used a 59AB manifold (Fenton 2X2) on my 8BA and had to space out the gen mount to get the pulley to align. That was the only mod required though. I also used the late oil filter that mounts to the boss on the left head. 1/4" double flare brake lines work great for hooking it up. Note: Upper fitting has a restriction in it to keep the oil pressure up on start. pigpen
No sir Pigpen. I'm just an energetic student who reads everything I can on these great engines. Experience only plays a small part in my B.S. Anytime I can add alittle more to the longetivty of the greatest engine it makes my day. I would love to have the experience of years spent by alot of guys who used these engines everyday.
Well, the various kinds of manifolds will bolt on any block, but they aren't all bolt-on-and-go. The late flatheads use a road draft tube crank case vent. The earlier ones ('48 and earlier) vent through the pan. If you use an early manifold on a late engine, you need to allow for proper crank case ventilation. Probably a non issue when going the other way. You can recognize the '49-'53 late model intakes by the presence of the road draft tube or a place to put one, and the front oil fill tube. Earlier manifolds don't have either of these up front. That being said, I still see a lot of early manifolds on late flatheads.
Get the manifold no matter what year it is!!!!!!! 48 and later has a crank case breather hole in the front near the generator mount. I think the filter is after market but good to have
