Is it even a bellhousing? Looks like Slant 6 with the starter bump at the top left, but there is another bump on the bottom left. I don't even see how a fork would hook up, unless it would be on the right side. British?

It's for an air cooled automatic transmission for an inline engine, but I don't know what....

Are there any numbers/letters/symbols on it?

V-8 Studes at one time had an air-cooled A/T. I want to say that it was like the early air-cooled Ford tranny?

Used non-detergent engine oil in it.

Thanks squirrel and pdq67. I will clean it up a bit and check for any markings. I didn't even think about it being for an automatic.

Jim, I found this on the bottom left. It looks like a date clock or just a symbol. The 9 could be an 8 and it could have a number at the ?
    Thanks, Wayne

That's the Mopar symbol in the lower left, in case you did not know?

Chrysler, but I can't remember what. I had one, got tired of it as wall art.

It's not for a DeSoto 330/Powerflite, which would be 1956. There are no cooling provisions on those. However, the bellhousing on my '57 Sportsman looks very similar to that. I'll see if I can get a pic of it in the next few days.

I don't know squat about the old Mopar transmissions, but I thought they also had one called the clutch flight? I think an auto with a clutch just to get in gear, then shift without clutching?

b&m made the "clutch flight" for mopar 727 and a "turbo clutch" for chevy turbo 400. They are really simple. Just a cut down automatic bolted to a scatter shield with a bracket off of the clutch that spins the front pump. I have a friend with a turboclutch, and i believe it is for sale.

I still think there was stock one in the late 40s to early 50's that had a clutch pedal. I'd have to look at an old book.

Those were the fluid drive transmissions. There were several different versions but it was basically just a standard transmission with a clutch and a fluid coupling. You could leave it in gear while stopped without deprssing the clutch.

It looks like the bell housing that was on my brother's '53-'54
Dodge with a Red Ram V8 small Hemi and a "semi-automatic"
transmission that I believe was called a "Gyromatic".
It had a clutch pedal and a column shift but I don't remember
    the details.
Seems like you used the clutch pedal to put it into 1st or reverse and then you could stop with the clutch out and it was
    like an automatic then.

the casting number does look like it's from 56, which rules out the slant 6? maybe behind a flathead 6?
