Chevy 292ci flywheel???

    Hi,

    Can anyone tell me what I need to convert my Chevy 292ci Six from auto to manual? I know enough to realise i need a flywheel and clutch!

    Does this engine need a unique flywheel and clutch or is there anything that can be swapped from another motor?

    I will most likely run it in front of my T5.

    The motor is currently on the engine stand and has the flexplate that it had when i bought it.

    Any advice much appreciated, thanks.

    Terry, the only difference for a 292 flywheel is the mounting holes.....
    292 uses 1/2" bolts.
    Use any 2 piece rear main (84 and down ) neutral balance flywheel that has the same OD as your flexplate. Then your current starter will work !
    Just drill the flange holes out to 1/2"..

    Look at the end of the crank, where the flexplate bolts on, does it have 3 dowels and the 1/2" bolts? or one dowel hole and 7/16" bolts? The early 292s are just like most other Chevy engines with the smaller bolts and single dowel.

    Anyways, you just need to get the matching flywheel for your engine.

    I'd figured that much out! :rolleyes:;)

    seriously though, thanks for the help guys. I'll get some more details on the bolt pattern over the weekend and hopefully work it out from that.

    Mine is a later model 292ci as far as i can work out.

    btw if you want to find out what engine it is, find the stamped numbers on the pad by the distributor, and the cast numbers back near the starter, and post them. We'll figure it out.

    In addition: use the cast flywheel on the street; you do have the option of 168 tooth or 153 tooth depending upon the bell housing....with the t-5 (S-10) I shortened the front bearing collar and the input shaft where it enters the pilot bushing; measure the depth of the pilot from the bell housing face and adjust the pilot depth into the crank...I had to recess my pilot .250 from flush to accomodate the splined length of the input shaft... I used the clutch****embly from an 86 Astro van 4.3 engine (release bearing also) ...in all likelyhood the bellhousing you select will be for the large bearing retainer so you will need the reducer from advance adaptors ....fats

    casting number on the block is 3851659 making it 67-90 model year. So will a sbc flywheel work?

    What about the other numbers? casting date, stamped engine number, stamped partial VIN (if it has one)?

    Chevy apparently changed to the 3 dowel design between 66-68. Quick way to find out is to look at the back of the crankshaft, if it has 3 dowels then you'd want the later flywheel.

    Yes, as long as it is the flywheel for the two piece seal crankshaft....I think the transition to single seal was in 89??? for the sbc.....the 4.3 clutch I mentioned above is for the 168 tooth flywheel....starter is determined by the bellhousing; early cast iron (side mounts) will use 63 truck starter, late aluminum (block mount starter) can use sbc for the appropriate tooth count on flywheel.....fats

    Yes, if you machine the bolt holes to 1/2".
