I'm trying to get one of my buddies to do his intro, by posting pics of his car... He brought the thing to my place today, we are going to put a Camaro Clip in it and lower it. It's pretty nice, not a lot of rust.
those caddys make a great ride. i used a camaro clip in my caddy but would never go that route again. 67-69 camaro or rear steer nova clip does not leave enough room for power steering unless you run a $300 gear drop . when i first did my 50 caddy i had to cut the shaft on the manual box down to get the u joints to not bind along with shorting the stock colum and lowering it where it mounted to the dash. the brakes where a little weak for the heavy caddy. If i was to do it again i would use a jaguar xj6 or xjs front clip. They are cheap and much stronger then a camaro and a lot less work to put in. (no need to remount the front sheet metalat radiator suport)
Radman, It's a 52. Metalshapes and I worked on it Tue. and are planning on working on it again this weekend. It looks really cool now and we will post pictures soon.
Hey Mike, From your other post, I have heard a camaro clip is the way to go, but I don't know what other options you have. I think these are very cool cars. In my opinion they look better stock or mildly done than heavily customized. Mine is a 61 series 1951, which is the same as yours with a good 6" lopped off just behind the door and out of the trunk. A really cool piece of little known history is that they used to race these things. They ran in Lemans and in NASCAR races. I know how slow things can be, but I look forward to seeing your progress. Mike is using a later one ( front steer ). Would that solve the problem you had? Also, how low did you make the Car? We mocked it up sitting on its bumpstops with the original suspension, and Mike wants that to be the rideheight, so we will use at least part of the step ( or Z ) that is in the Camaro Subframe... Thanks for the tips. Its great to get info from somebody that has already done the same thing on the same type car...
speaking of trim...I'm still trying to find that one piece of trim I'm missing. The verticle stainless on the passenger rear door. Just doesn't look right without it. I thought about shaving both sides and the rear door handles but I just can't bring myself to do it. Those skirts are pretty much never on. Dang theives. I'm actually planning on picking up a new aircleaner to run on a regular basis so the batwing isn't under the hood all the time. love these cars. love your interior. I am thinking of going with the exact pattern..just different colors. Cream and black. Happen to know the original headliner? I think it's cotton. Offwhite? I need to get it replaced. Figured I'd install it myself..get someone else to make it. And throw in a black carpet kit. Make the inside look even bigger..haa.
the later clip look to be more of a problem when i did mine. i had both sitting next to the car. the later front steer clip has the box much higher and faqrther foward. you would need atleast 2 stub shafts on the steering to get it to line up nice. i used part of the stock frame z from the clip the frame was about 6-8 inches off the ground about the same as the car on the bump stops. check in tech o matic for the jaguar front in a buick. i have done a similar swap and it is sooooooo much easyer then the camaro.
Hey Sag Kustom, I'm having trouble finding that tech article. I have been trying "Jaguar front in a Buick" and some other search words with no luck-- do you have any ideas?
I just tried to look for it to and had no luck. From what i remember he used the front and rear in a buick i had posted on it but was unable to find it in my list of posts
Enough to work on, but not enough to stand back to see what you have done... It is actually really cool, It's one of those cars that I would never give a second glance as a project, But the more I look at it, the more I like it...
Thanks Slag Kustoms. I printed the info and will look it over with metalshapes this weekend. We need to make a decision soon so this car can get on the road!!!!!!
if you need measurements or pictures of the jag front let me know i have one sitting for my next custom.
