Anybody take the paint out of a rattle can and put it in a gun? Hold it upside down and release all of the propellant then puncture and pour out?

There is a couple of colors I want to mix so I need it out.

    no, don't think i'd try

  3. Yup...I do it with the Dupli-Color semi gloss black. I use a lot of it and save what I can't get out of the can. I keep it in a glass screw top quart jar...

    ?Why? :D

IMO the only "good" thing about spray paint is the convenience of spraying it out of the can, the paint itself is slow drying shit! :D

I often did that as a kid, with half-empty cans, to get to the marble!

+1, buy some tractor paint to spray would probably cost about the same and hold up even better

  7. I've done it for model cars, a real PITA. Fit a spray wand from a can of carb cleaner to the paint can, direct it into a jar or can. Gotta go real easy and expect a mess. I stopped doing it and just buy HOK paints now.

Model builders do it all the time. spray it into a bottle using a cut off drinking straw and drape a piece of saran wrap over the top of the spray nozzle with the straw sticking trough it (keeps the paint from blowing all over). Let the aerosol "gas out" and proceed....

There is so little paint in a spray bomb that you can buy it a lot cheaper in a pint can. Most paints have the same color in both bombs and pints.

i still collect the marbles, no spray bomb escapes me, i just lay the can on its side, poke a hole in the side of the can near the bottom with a sharp piece of metal, when the pressure is gone i hack a large hole in the side and pour out the paint and marble. dont try this at home kids you will take your eye out.

  11. The paint will be very thin as well, too thin to brush paint.

This is more or less how I do it(I use a brass tube) But I find it pretty easy/effective.

used to do this as a kid, mostly because i had no money. and it was so i could get every drop out of discarded spray bombs, to paint model cars, my bike or what ever project i was working on..used to collect the ball in the can too.

the paint sucks, its thin..not much in there..and im older now and just throw them out.

I have a small detail gun and a larger HPLV now so i dont mess with the bomb cans much any more.

I did it once when I was a kid to get the ball out, thinking it was empty because it wouldnt spray anymore, well the nozzle was just clogged, took a hatchet to a half full can of paint under pressure......not a pretty picture. It could have been a LOT worse though.

No hatchet involved but there are flat black spray spatters all over my garage and almost everything in it from a full can falling off the shelf and landing on something that punched a hole in it last spring. Damned thing just about chased me out the door of the garage.

As some of the guys have said above, the model car guys do it often. They even have a name for it, "de-canting." I think they do it mostly to get custom colors from commercial paint lines that are not available at the hobby shop and then air brush it. But I suppose they could also do it to hobby paints if they wanted to airbrush it instead of using the little mini-bomb cans as is. Gary

One of my first jobs out of school, I was working in the drafting dept of a company in Eastern Ky. One day I was walking through the production/shop area and saw a guy covered in black paint. I asked what happened and he said he was having a hard time getting the little balls out of the cans of spray paint without making a mess. I asked why he was trying to get them out and he basically shrugged and said "I dunno". I said "well then stop." His reply was "why, did you want'em?"

    - Same guy used a bicycle pump everyday to air up a tire on his car that had a slow leak when he got off work. He probably pumped up that same tire at least 2 or 3 times a day.

Screw the drinking straw idea!! I use one from a WD-40 can.. :D Cut that straw up in 3 pieces so you can save a couple for later use.. Then get an old spray nozzle from a used up can of model paint or automotive paint.. Then dig out the spray tip from the nozzle and insert the WD-40 straw in the nozzle.. BINGO! Perfect fit.. :)

I dropped a can of black spray paint inside (then) Yellow Front Store it landed on the nozzle. It was BAD. Sprayed till it was empty, the floors, me, counters and all the other cans of paint. Luckly a friend worked there and told me go and get out of here.

When I was about 12 or 13 I was hanging out with my pal John building stock car models. His kid bother Marty was being a little pain in the ass and John ran him out of the garage. Marty got so pissed he came back with a big ol pair of garden shears and made like he was gonna cut us and then stabbed a can of gold spray laying at his feet. That is some shit I will never forget. Look like gold geyser on turd mountain right there, he started screaming like hell and his whole chest, face, and hair was gold in about a second flat. I couldn't even believe he did it, but damn it was funny.
Sometime I will spray some paint in a paint lid and use it with a little brush for small touch-ups.
