Have a '89 Chevy S10 front clip in a '51 Ford project car. Installing tubular control arms for air bag set up. Bought through an online ad. Did not come with bushings or upper arms cross shafts. Can I use stock shafts? Aftermarket bushings or rubber best? Will only be a basic up'n'down cruisin' car, not a show off ride. Thanks (I know many here do not like S10 suspension, but many do. I know for sure that there is a lot of approval for air bags)
Do you have a press? Micrometer? Are you close enough to a parts store you could go measure the new ones? Are they made to take the stock size or not?
have a press and digital calibrator. finding the cross shaft in stock locally is the tough one. I know that some sites offer a larger than stock diam bushings for replacement on a worn stock set up. so, likely can up with correct bushing in rubber. but, still need to know if OK to run a stock shaft. Poly urethane bushing kit prices online are close to good rubber bushings. either have a better overall ride?
besides that very helpful bunny with a pancake on its head... i would check on maybe s10forum.com to find some really good info about that stuff
still searching online, with no answers to my question. instead of trying stock upper shafts looking at ones for tubular control arms from Thorbecke Brothers and rollpans.com
I thought urethane bushings were prone to squeeking. But as long as its just an up and down car I would throw it together with whatever is cheapest, as long as its new. Not alot of rocket science here in bushings
There is a forum dedicated to S10's, they can definatly help you out, the link is s10forum.com Good luck
Thanks Muddi1, been to that site and mys10.com and s10v8.com without any luck on information. Edelbroke Thanks, figure rubber bushings will work Ok. But, concerned if stock shaft will work-take close look at pics posted.
This should help Joker http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f198/howto-byc-upper-control-arm-install-232639/ It seems he is reusing the stock shaft on his how to thread. Hope this helps and good luck.
Let me know if it pulls up. Sometimes it will not allow you to view unless your signed in as a member. If it doesn't work ill copy it on to this thread for you. As Well as his Pics. ----Trevor
T-rev - Thanks. was able to view it. I think I saw part of it when I was searching online for info. but, BYC is closed and I could not see their products. answers a lot of questions. will search for article again online to print out without all of the ads on S10FORUM. like here, sometimes you do not know the correct wording to do a proper search.
Hey No problem thats what i think the HAMB is all about. to help your Fellow HAMBer out when he or she is havin issues. So I try to do my best to help everyone out.
I didnt like all the ads either, I own a 01 s10 so I just went ahead a subscribed, got rid of the ads but the site can seem disorganized at times like they are doing maintenance or something. When it is runnign right it is a great place. I like just checking out the tech article mostly. What are the arms from, I am sure you have posted but I cant read it while typing ..I should open another window !!!! lol..
AHAH!! another window does wonders lol, Energy suspension has a rebushing kit for a decent price. (please forgive me if I improperly post any part supplier names). I forget the part numbers but I put them on my 01 when I lowered it and used the supplied bushing grease. I have a press here at home so I just measured and remeasured and pressed my old out and new in. I have had them for 3 years now and no sqweaks or other problems. Make sure to connect the sway bar loose until yo uget the weight of the vehicle on it then tughten it up. At first I did it with out wight and my truck handled funny, it was seemed very "tippy" when cornering. Good Luck!!!
going to run the bare metal ones since have matching set. have done reinforcing and added shock/sway bar tabs to lowers. ordered Moog offset upper shaft kit from partsgeek.com-will see how those work. still have to figure out lower bushings. have rareparts.com in Stockton that i can go to if I can not figure this stuff out.
