The 305 heads actually have a pretty good following a**** 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird guys...check out http://www.thirdgen.org Lots of good info on them there, and 305 stuff in general.
no offence but i wouldnt piss on a 305 if it was on fire ive had a few all junk after 100K miles some way before that i understand being on a budget and haveing to use what you have but .......
Do-a-search-do-search, yada, yada. At least he did not ask "Let's see your: tat's, dog, club jacket, shop, fridge, favorite beer, ect. It's a tech engine question to improve performance. Stagmuffin, bump the cam up in the .440 to .454 range on lift max. Keep the duration under 225 for daily use and still have a boost of power. Match the cam to the intake and exhaust. There is a ballpark figure for you. Without busting yer ball's. Later!
I had no power adders at the time I was street racing them.. The stock T5 and the optional 3.08 gears out back. Standard gears were the 2.73's... I did order the '88 air and radio delete. The only cars I lost to were the Buick GN cars... Boy did they make me look bad..
Yeah I know... Once I got my first drag racing ticket, I kinda slowed down a bit.. That was over 20 years ago.. Now days (at 50) I take it easy..
I love it when people don't read. This dude is in the UK. 383 strokers aren't at every chain parts store over there.
The 305 one of the biggest POS ever made by GM. Second only to a 307. Niether one would make a decent boat anchor.
Actually with all that m*** and weight, they would make a pretty good boat anchor. Of course you couldn't lower it or pull it up by hand
Ditch the 305 and the 307 and buy a decent 327 or 350. It will cost you less in the end. The 305 has pretty much the worse combination of parts to work with. Intake and heads flow too little too make any real power.
My 307 went 12.40 all day long with a set of 77 305 heads a 30 30 cam and a 650 dp. learn how to build an engine before you condemn one.
the only GN a fox body could beat would be mine, but thats cuz the motors out of it He looked bad because he wasnt in the buick. sorry for the thread hi jack and the bragging on a very off topic car. But I still love myne.
Boat Anchor. Add power packs heads, forged 305 pistons, pink rods and you get a roller cammed stroker 265. Another, destroked 305 with 283 crank/spacer bearings Clevite MS1110H/ small journal rods = roller cammed 265.
To the 305 haters out there, perhaps you might expound to us on why they are all junk, and will never be otherwise? The bore and stroke ratio isn't all that bad, consider adding a 1/4" in both directions and you come up with the Holy Grail 383 by comparison. It's a good small cube engine that will perform well when used on the street, especially with mods. I know because I've built and driven a several of them in O/T cars and trucks. There is no magic formula either. Just do what is done on other engines of a similar displacement and it will take care if itself. ( cam, compression, headwork etc.) Just don't get carried away and get in the big is always better syndrome when picking your parts. Good Luck.
Read the man's location. UK + strapped for cash = run-what-you-have-on-hand. HELPFUL tech tip's to wake up his SBC.
remind me wich part of his post he asked for your opinion. whats the difference if hes putting it in a 49 merc, a triumph car, or using it to drive his pool pump? he asked for advice on gettin power outa the motor, not what the thing belongs in. the more you tear new people apart the more discouraged there guna get and the faster this hobby dies.
prolly the most logicaly/best way to go about this. i would do everything oldsrtocket said and def run a holly 4bbl on there nothing crazy, but itl make it feel way better having the va*** secondaries on your side. good luck with it
Hot Rod Magazine had an article back in '84 called, Deadly Lessons, Prepping the 400-hp 305 cid Z28 engine with RHS built 041 heads, 292 Comp cam, stock cast pistons & rods etc..Flywheel: 402 HP @ 7200 / Road HP 300 @ 7000 I have the article if anyone wants a photo copy just pm me your emali addy. I personally like a slightly built 305 for it's bottom end torque & good 0-60 times. EDIT, here is a link to a copy the build http://www.hioutput.com/tech/400hp/400hp.html
Here's what I did to mine. 350 heads w/2.02 intake valves, over the counter 350/350 hp cam from Chevrolet dealer, Edelbrock dp manifold, Holly carb (don't remember size), set of cheap headers. Beat the living **** out of my ("305s are a piece of ****") friend's 350 many many times.
i modified a friends 77 camero with a 305.set up the dist and replaced the stock manifold with a offy 360 dual-port intake with a q-jet carb, which modified myself.a trans-go shift kit in the t350,duel exhaust using ford converters and 77 trans/am exhaust system.installed new timing chain straight up.result was a car that could hold its own with a 350 vette and deliver 26 mpg on the highway.
