This is a product endor*****t for Kevin Lee's Spun wheel discs. Kevin went out of his way to straighten out a small snafu in me getting my wheel discs and I want to thank him for being a stand up guy. This board has some neat folks hanging around here. The first pic is of my rpu with the bent spoke Kelseys on it. It's kinda a shame to hide such a great looking rim but I love the early Bonneville look of the the Stu Hilborn streamliner.(Check ot the latest HOPUP for a really neat article on it) Well, off goes some dough and I get a really cool product in the mail. First pic is of my truck with the black wires and 35 Ford caps on it
Here's the tire off the car ready for dress up. A person could use standard 35 Ford 16 inchers for the same effect and save a bunch of money since your covering them up.
Next pic is of the disc on the pattern that is supplied in the kit. Tape it on the disc and flip it over and use a small set punch to mark on the aluminum.
Next drill the four holes following the directions using the suggested drill bit. Debur the hole and set it on the rim and use a small set punch again to mark the rims where you intend to drill. Pop a cap on the wheel to align the disc to the place it will be mounted.
As you can see from this next pic I painted the edges of the rims with a bright hotrod red to give them a little pop so there wasn't so much black. This way I can pull them off and pop my beauty rings on to cover most of the red and still have black wires with just a smidge of red trim around the edge. Basic hotrod cool.
Next you need to drill the holes in the rim without demounting the tires and poking nasty holes in those sweet "Stones". Deflate the tires first. I used a piece of thin sheet metal under the edge of the rim and first drilled small pilots before going to the final hole size. I also used a small plastic wedge as well. This lets you know before you hit the sheet metal. You don't want to drill to fast. Take you time and you wont make a mistake.
After you get your holes drilled blow out shavings under the rim. They can cause a flat in the tubes if you got them. Use a tap or the self tappping screws that are provided in th kit and run them into the holes to get some threads. I decided to use stainless steel ****on head allens instead of the phillips panhead self tapping screws. I'll see how they hold up. I may have to go back to the screws. Time will tell. Also included in this kit is some nylon spacers to go between the disc and the rim. You'll need them
I was faced with a small problem at this point. How to keep those small damn spacer in place while screwing the disc on the rim. This is how I solved it. I use a small rubber washer to hold the spacer on the fastener. Here is a pic. I hope you can make it out. Mount disc. Make a mark on the back of disc and on the rim. I used an arrow and a number so I know which rim the discs mate up to. This will help on alignment of holes.
I next filed the edges of the inner hole. The disc need a lil' lovin to fit the caps on. Overall fit is pretty damn good though.
For the final deal I took my 35 Ford stainless caps and sandblasted them and finished them with a scotch brite pad. This gives them a similiar brushed aluminum look. I thought about painting them and I still may do another set for a different look in the future. Leaving them shiny seemed too weird for me. Maybe if the discs were painted that would look ok, but for me this is the look I was after. I hope I can help someone with all this nonsense. Trust your local hamb supplier. Good work Kevin. This shold be good for a few mph's at Bonneville ya think? Now can I have the inner wheel discs to go around my 40 backing plates please?
Nice. I'll just cut in and say that curbspeed was a patient guy waiting for things to be taken care of...I pretty much ruined his Christmas. So appologies go out to his wife too. Sorry guys. And good call on the rubber washers. I'm almost embarrased to say what I use now...grease. Another thing is once you get the first one drilled you can toss that pain-in-the-*** paper pattern and just stack the drilled Disc on top of the others to mark the holes. It all looks good - they really fit your truck. I'm waiting for someone to paint a set to match their car and add a nice double stripe right around the cap. That's my plan...but for now mine are still bare metal too. I'm getting ready to redesign the Spun page so I'm looking for shots of the Discs installed if you're interested in sending some shots - I'll send you a message later this week. And again, sorry. I think I finally figuerd out what happened but I stopped numbering product after the first few dozen sets so I'll never know for sure...probably wouldn't have even if they were numbered. Next product will be a filler for the backside to cover the space between the wheel and brake drum.
"Next product will be a filler for the backside to cover the space between the wheel and brake drum." I was wondering when that would materialize. A "fitting" mate to the exterior discs. That's what I'm after... r
I saw these on Dales truck yesterday in person. They look even better in person than they do on here. I like the disks way better than the wires. I think a set of gloss black ones would look cool too. Hey Dale, you should give a set away at the HotRod-a-Rama (August 5th-6th) don't ya think?
Thanks guys. I am happy with them. Would love to give some away at the show, but better yet would be Kevin coming out here with some of his buddies and setting up a booth and selling some product to pay for his trip. Kevin? Hey are ya still gonna make them in steel? I would like another pair to paint black or red as suggested. Oh, and by the way, you did not ruin my Christmas. I was ok with everything. Really. The neat thing about these is you can change the look in a matter of minutes . Just pop the caps and beauty rings back on and roll. Hey Chris!( Loogy) Thanks for coming down yesterday. Was cool to hang out with ya for a while. Thank again Mr. Grimlock. Ya, I'll send ya all the pics ya want. Let me know when ya want them.
