What kind of resin will stand up to heat?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by flyin'eye, Feb 28, 2005.

  1. OK, heres the deal...I put a three 1 barrel setup on my ranchero, I'm using Holley 1909s for carbs. I have it together and running, but I'm having trouble mounting air cleaners. The air horns on the carbs are about 1 5/8", but the smallest air cleaners I could get were 2 5/16". I need some kind of spacer to fit the two together. I thought of using a 1 5/8" set collar, and turning the outside down to the size of the air cleaners, but the configuration of the carbs makes it impossible to center the aircleaner to the carb, it needs to be offset slightly. The solution I have come up with is to make a mold, and make the parts I need out of plastic of some sort. Does anyone know of a product that will work for this, that would stand up to underhood temperatures?

There are high temp aluminum filled Epoxies that will stand up to 500 degrees for short periods of time and that carb's temp for ever.
But, by the time you make a mold and cast them you could probably carve two or three of them out of aluminum plate, much cheaper, and faster.

  3. I agree that aluminum would be an easier solution, but I can't seem to find anyone who has aluminum plate that is thick enough. I need to be able to set screw it to the carbs, so I think 3/8" thick would be a minimum...

You could also try to find an exhaust shop to expand some pipe for you to fit the measurements on both ends. I tried this, but like an idiot I left the carb and air cleaner at my house and the fool at the shop I went to messed it up. It was only like $3 so I didn't bother going back for him to do what I really wanted.

If you know of a decent exhaust shop, you might want to stop in and show them what you want and do it like that. I was going to have them make the part that goes over the top of the carb just a little small and cut little slits so that it could be clamped, and keep the part that the air cleaner would fit over a little large, so the air cleaner would fit snug, and use its clamp to get it tight.
This way you could also make the adaptors different heights if you have clearance issues.

Well, if your talking fibergl*** resin- and thats ***uming you are willing to take the time to make a plug/mold, polyester or vinylester would both work up near the carbs...it's down around the exhaust/headers that might pose a problem. Epoxy resin might be a better choice, but its alot more expensive.
