I just installed a rebuilt TCI TH 350 in my 1976 Nova. I am having trouble with it not downshifting from 2nd to 1st when you floor the throttle (at any speed). It downshifts from 3rd to 2nd just fine. Other than that, it operates just fine. I had to adjust the governor's springs and weights to get the WOT shifts to occur at the correct time. The detent cable has been adjusted/checked multiple times. TCI sent me a different throttle body with no effect. I am wondering if the cable itself could be the cause but that wouldn't explain why the 3rd to 2nd downshift works fine. Anyone have any clues as to what may be the problem?
Check the down shift timing valve in the valve body. Its the second valve from the right looking down at the valve body. Push in on the plug and remove the pin. Will be a plug and a spring. Remove the spring and replace with a small nut holding the valve in the down position. replace the plug and pin. It's a safety feature to keep the trans from down shifting at to high a speed and blowing the low roller clutch out of the trans. kcl
Thx for the info - I will check that out. Unfortunately the deep freeze/snow has put a temporary halt to my quest to get this issue figured out.
