Ok, Need some help..was told this was a 35-50 model Ford transmission. Found on internet close to my location. Anyone recognize it? Second question, will it bolt up to my 1953 Ford Flathead. The engine came out of a running 1953 Ford pickup, it has a three speed transmission currently that was column shift. Would like to convert to a floor shift four speed.

    Thanks for the help
    Chad

  2. What? If ya want to convert to a "floor shift four speed" looks like ya got the wrong ******. Can't tell but if that's the truck four speed box wouldn't it be the "hay truck" model? LOW 1st gear and no syncro? I ended up with two of these four speeds but couldn't find a way to make them car friendly so we plugged in a T5. Would be cool if they could be modified but we couldn't find any info. The T5 hookup would be hard to beat in our experience....

skidmarks is right on, you have a light duty 3 speed there and the bell that you need. Its basically the same trans as the column shift trans you got with the engine but floor shift. The gears should also be slightly different and individual gears will not swap out but I have read that you can swap out all of the gears to the so don't just throw that box away.

Moefuzz, another user on the HAMB helped to put together a guide on identifying the different bell housings.

I think the right range for the bell you are looking for is '48-'51 for the trucks and '49-'50 Merc cars. After looking though Moe's stuff, note that you need the matching starter plate for the bell you get, they don't all just interchange :-( For the trucks it should not matter which trans the truck has 3spd or 4spd they should have the same pattern. The 6 cly bell looks similar but is different.

If you want a "car" 4 speed, find a '49 Ford stamped steel bellhousing. Mustang 4 speed will then bolt up
