I think you need to first try to identify where the whine is coming from. Ive had over 10 vehicles with 302s and ive had a lot of whines, haha. My daily is a 302 and an aod and the ****** whines like something fierce, I can definitely tell its in the ******. Tell me where its coming from, then I can try to help. Vacuum leaks can make VERY strange whines if its from the front. If its in the ******, same as everyone else said, just drive it and try not to think about it.

Had a similar deal in my o/t daily. Turned out to be the front bearing in the alternator. Load didn't effect it, was strictly rpm related. Drove me crazy until I finally found it the hard way.

Well its not the spedo cable or stereo.
I'm still trying to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from but it doesn't seem to make it unless I'm moving with my foot on the gas, when I take my foot off of the gas it goes away, it sounds like a winding up noise.... this is really frustrating

How about the vacuum line from the intake to the trans??? Those get brittle and pop leaks...

I will look into the trans pump, as for vacuum line they are only about a year old but I'll double check them, they looked ok but I will look closer.

Unfortunately it sounds like it may be the transmission.
Did this just start suddenly or has it been there and getting worse
    for a while?
The whining sounds like a worn out front pump (which is a
hydraulic pump that creates the transmission fluid pressure
needed for clamping large bands on turning components)
You should probably remove the transmission oil pan and look
for any metal fragments there which would indicate major
components are failing and grinding themselves up.
Since you are on a very tight budget you should try just cleaning the pan(expect to find some dark muck from wear of
the "sacrificial" band lining and multiple clutch plate linings)
but hopefully you will find no metal pieces. Try to baby it until
you save up some trans. overhaul bucks.
I would expect a noisy differential if the wheels are off the ground and it's running under no load.
Be EXTREMELY careful getting under a raised running car.

I had a similar problem with a truck I had, when ever I would hit the go-pedal hard my girlfriend would whine about me crashing. I solved the problem by getting rid of the girl and picking up one who liked to go fast.

    Seriously though.

I had a u-joint on a front diff about to die, and it would scream so loud you would have thought the trans was going to die. 12 dollar u joint, no more whining.

haha. the u joints are about a year old and they still look and feel good

Yeah I'm really starting to think its the transmission, I will pull the pan in the morning, all I have is a carport, and its dark.
thanks again for all your guys help

Just drive it until something breaks.

I would also suggest checking wheel bearings for kicks, they can also scream and make strange noises.

I'm going to take it to my girlfriends moms this weekend so I can pull some **** apart.

ohhh yeah it started all of a sudden

  14. Most guys not experienced waste a ton of money throwing parts at something trying to fix a problem. It would be worth it to spend a few bucks to get a driveline mechanic to take it for a spin to ****yze the noise. Ask around to find a reliable mechanic though......

There are a lot of things it can be, pump, universals, a gear, a spark knock, could be a brake or even an emergency brake. I was fully convinced that I had a shot axle bearing, ready to swap out the rear, it was a broken piece of spring rubbing in the brake rotors, good as new for $45. Have a pro check it out, sometimes it's the best thing to do.

I understand what you are talking about. My o/t daily driver Ford's ****** whines. It almost sounds like a power steering pump that is low on fluid.

It's the ****** pump. Mine whines, then stops, it's tempermental. It also started shifting hard. I am in the same boat as you, it being my only means of transportation. I am just gonna drive it until it goes then worry about it. It has been doing it for about 7 months now.

That's an easy fix. All you have to do is jack it up, pull the axles and the ham comes out with around 10 (?) or so nuts. Take an axle with you to the junkyard to make sure the splines of the ham you're looking at are the same. Wrap your u-joint cups to the u-joint with tape so they don't hit the deck and ****ter.

The only other cost is new oil seals for the axles, the differential gasket and some gear oil.

    Bob
