I hate the painted bumpers on my 54 Buick with a hot passion. Since cash is way to short to re-chrome them, and not an investment I'd make on this particular car anyway, I'm going to go with some chrome pain a buddy of mine is getting some nice results with. Will post pics when it's done, hopefully within the 2-3 of months. I can't stand another season with those things on the car.
Try Restoration World in Huber Heights, Ohio at http://resto-world.com/ or go with Briz Bumpers http://brizbumpers.com/ . Thats what I run on my 49. I am a big fan of the folks at Briz.
I agree with your original post about 80s body color bumpers..looked like shit them, still does..but if you have to paint them, use silver.I've seen several cars with silver bumpers that looked just fine.My first impression of silver bumpers is an unfinished car.I'd rather see silver than fake chrome. Then when you hit the lottery, chrome everything
Have you looked into Spectra-Chrome? Some swear you can't tell the difference, some say it's just shiny paint. Personally, I would rather save for the chrome. Heres a video about the process used to apply it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG28rd3A868
I currently have silver paint on my bumpers, but it's about to be removed and eventually will get re chromed. Chrome is the way to go.
silver paint ,silver flake , then striped all over .... its ok ,till i park next to a 59 with nice chrome..... i have full 1 pc custom front and rear bumpers + custom grille...7 quotes from here , san jose to sac. averege $ 6 to 7 grand ....f*#k that i ain't rich .......
KEYSTONE will do bumpers fairly reasonable, 1,150 for 53 belair including the bumper guards. Alot but better than paint-been done that road.
I'm from the Ol Skool 60's and still stuck there with rods & kustoms. I don't ever remember seeing a car with painted bumpers back then. If the bumper was really bad, we took it off until we could find a junk yard replacement. Rechroming was out of the question for 95% of us even then. Today my thoughts have not changed, painted is for the 80' & 90's pastel color street rods and they suck, even the silver looks cheap. I would try buying one that is in useable shape off the net, I've seen them for around $200.00 to $300.00 + shipping (got my rear bumper for $125.00 at a parts meet & it is excellent) which is still a long way from the thousands your looking at for rechrome! Try running an ad on the H.A.M.B., bet you will get some results.
Shipping from NFLD can be a pain, I know there are guys that make monthly runs from St Johns to Ontario and back for all the Downhomers here. If I can help from Ontario let me know, but the price of chrome has skyrocketed here.
make a cardboard sign that says "HELP ME I'M cHrOMELESS" and stand by a busy intersection in your grubby clothes... you'll have new chrome in no time.
