I was just thinking - who else still has their first car, & how & why... I'll start, I got my car from my dad, he bought it for $200 from an older guy at the airbase in Tacoma WA. Used it to drive to work. My dad didn't work on cars but he saw that I wanted to learn so he bought me my first tool set and turned me loose. He gave me the car when he was transferred to Ohio to an air base there I stayed and went to school. Well then I drive it from WA to MN in April! Through heavy rains and snow storms with my cousin from Germany(he wanted to see the US), and I ended up here...The car? a 1965 Rambler Classic 660, 4-door sedan. ( almost didn't make it, blew a oil filter gasket in NV, bald tires up front, snow tired in rear) Now that my dad has passed away, I don't think I'll ever part with it. It's been in the family for over 24 years & I've been driving it for about 22. Maybe we say we love old cars, but its not so much the car, it's the memorys of the people along the way thet make it .... FullBlast
I still have the pickemup my dad bought for me to work on when I was 15. I'm 43 now. http://www.selectric.org/59truck/index.html has more info.
I was 13 when I bought my second choice, a complete, stock 1930 Model A coupe. First choice was a hammered 32 with green and white tuck and roll with a full house flathead and 39 toploader. Price was $250. Too high for me. I've put on a little over 375,000 miles since 1960. Drove it to high school, college and everywhere. Still have the 34 pickup I bought in 64, too. The coupe is down for the tenth repair of the radiator, though. Something about high speed commutes on an interstate that's as smooth as a broken sidewalk... I even have studded tires for driving in weather like the picture.
Still have my '66 Plymouth. Bought it when I was fifteen, before I got my license. I can't it. Forget sentimentality- I'd have to admit how much money I've "lost" in restoring it!
Jep, I'll never fergit that first still. It was give down to me by my grandpappy who got it from his granpappy. It's still out in the woods down by coon holler and.... ...........whut? This here's about first cars?...........nevermind.
I thought the same thing! I was thinking man I don't think I would be posting about that on here! I don't have my first car but I do have the old Rodding & Re-styling magazine dated 1964 that I found in 1974 with a cool ass 31 Coupe that I said I would build someday. Guess what I'm working on now!
I still have the export '48 Ford my Father bought new and that I came home from the hospital in in 1948. Top that for firstness or whatever!
I've still got my Charger, which was my first daily driven car. I picked it up when I was 16 and it's still my main set of wheels. Just got rid of my first project, which was a '66 Chevy truck that my grandpa bought new. My dad and I started working on it when I was around twelve. Wish we could have finsihed it the way we wanted. .
I still have my 53 F-100 that my dad and I put together when I was 15. Still pretty much looks the same, was at HAMB drags this year. I'm 31 now, I put my son's name on the title the day he was born, he is now 6. So it will be his first rod too! Lots of chances to sell it over the years, but pretty much priceless now!!!!
My 55 chevy 2 door Hardtop, My dad helped me buy it when I was 14. It had the attachment with it that I had to graduate Highschool to get it free and clear as my graduation gift. Useless
Ya might think about editing the title to "first car still?". I thought it was about moonshine as well. I still got mine. I haven't driven it since '93. My uncle bought it when it was only a couple yrs old. It filtered thru to me & I'd always wanted it.
Does second count? I still have my 58 Impala that I bought in '73 for $400. Sold it 12 years later, bought it back a year after that, and swore it won't go away again. My Dad and I stripped it and he laquered it silver blue with the white top. You can run your hand over what paint is left and take it right off.
Bought my 68 GTO in 78, and still have it. In 92 the engine & tranny were rebuilt and in 93 it received a new paint job. We still enjoy driving it. The wife wouldn't let me sell it if I wanted to.
Still have mine... it's been 18 years and countin'... many have come and gone, but the ole Mayflower has stuck...
