I have a friend that is a lurker and he is getting ready to start on a chassis for his A. He is tryng to decide what axle he is wanting a 4 inch drop or a six. Please post a picture of your car with a brief discription of your suspension what axle and spring and where you ordered it from Speedway, Posies, etc. this will be mounted to the stock model A crossmember not a suicide mount. Thanks,Mel
Mine is a 4in drop, posies reverse eye spring, chevy spindles with 50 chevy brakes. Have heard that the 6 inch drop is alot more complicated with steering linkage. Mine is plenty low enuf for me. Tell the lurker to come on board, lets see that project...Fido
]Mine is a 4in drop, posies reverse eye spring, 40 ford spindles with 39 ford brakes. the 6 inch drop is alot of drop with the weight of the motor and everything else up front and what ever tires u run up front will effect that drop too heres a pic
I'd go with a 4" drop (thats what Im going to use). Its about as far as axles were safely dropped back in the '50s. Good luck! -Dean
I'm not hijacking this thread but let me ask this one: You, 4" axle users, do you have any kickup/Z in your front rails or are they original? I have 2" Z and 4" Super Bell coming into my Model A but I don't have even mocked them up yet. Also I don't have bought a front spring yet. Thanks, Mika bttt
4 inch drop, using superbell axle is what I have on mine. I agree with most replies that any more and problems to get the steering right isn't worth it.
tell him what ever drop he ends up with, he wants to make sure his wheel without rubber on it is the lowest thing in the front end. If you lose your tire you want to be able to ride the rim without something like a shock mount or the axle to hit hte ground first.
Good point I had a front tire come off the rim and I was glad I ahered to the scrub line theroy. A tie rod bolt or any other is not a good thing hitting the pavement.
My coupe has a 3 inch front frame Z, speedway crossmember, 4 inch dropped axle, and a speedway reversed eye leaf spring.
You don't necessarily need a dropped axle. My A has a stock 40's front axle with a reversed spring. The 40's axles have a slight factory drop, but are a little wider. It's not super low, but I wanted a 40's early 50's style car and I am very happy with the way it sits. I am running 7.50-16s and 6.00-16s. I could drop the fornt end another 3/4" by going to 5.50-16 in the front. Mike
Love the stance & pipes & overall look/stylin' of your roadster Swiss Mike. You got antmore pix? I'd love to see 'em. Koops.....
